LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles police officer who says he was harassed by other officers at Central Division because he's black was awarded $1.2 million in damages for emotional distress and mental suffering

Attorney Gregory W. Smith says a Los Angeles Superior Court jury announced the verdict Tuesday after deliberating less than four hours.

Officer Earl Wright alleged in the suit filed in 2011 that he was harassed since 2008 or 2009 and that the department failed to take his complaints seriously.

Smith says officers put up racist posters of Wright in the station, including one from the television show "Sanford and Son" with Wright and another black officer's face on it entitled "Wright/Davis Family Portrait."

Deputy City Attorney Daniel Aguilera says the city is examining its options for challenging the verdict.
