BODY FOUND ON SHORE IN CONTRA COSTA COUNTY: MARTINEZ (AP) — Authorities are investigating the discovery of a woman’s body that was found washed up on the shore at Lone Tree Point in the San Francisco Bay area.
The Oakland Tribune reports an anonymous caller reported finding the body to the Contra Costa County sheriff’s office on Saturday.
Sgt. Tyrone Davis says the woman was identified as a 58-year-old resident of American Canyon, but her name is being withheld until next of kin is notified.
Davis says there is no immediate evidence of foul play but investigators aren’t ruling anything out.
4 HOSPITALIZED AFTER STORE PEPPER SPRAY EXPOSURE: COVINA (AP) — The Los Angeles County Fire Department says 14 people were exposed to pepper spray in a Home Depot store and four of them were taken to hospitals.
Fire Supervisor Bernard Peters says the pepper spray was released inside the Home Depot in Covina on Monday afternoon.
It’s not clear whether those exposed were workers or customers or how serious their injuries were.
Home Depot managers tell the San Gabriel Valley Tribune that the store was evacuated and shut down for about 30 minutes before reopening.
Covina is a suburb some 20 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles.
GAS VICTIMS IN APARTMENT IDENTIFIED AS FATHER, SON: MOUNTAIN VIEW (AP) — Officials say two people found dead at a California apartment filled with toxic gas have been identified as a father and his teenage son.
Authorities said Monday that 53-year-old Lian Liu and his 17-year-old son, William Liu, were found in the Mountain View apartment Wednesday after police and firefighters responded to reports of noxious fumes in the neighborhood.
Police say one of the victims died by suicide and the other died accidentally, but they would not say which one killed himself.
After authorities arrived at the scene, they evacuated several buildings and four officers were treated for exposure to fumes.
Officials say investigators determined that the fumes came from calcium sulfide and sulfuric acid, and did not come from a natural gas leak.
BOY, 15, DROWNS IN ORANGE COUNTY BACKYARD POOL: GARDEN GROVE (AP) — Orange County authorities are investigating the weekend drowning of a 15-year-old boy in a pool at a home in Garden Grove.
The Orange County Register reports the victim was attending a small gathering at the house on Saturday when friends say he couldn’t be found.
After searching the house, friends checked the backyard and found him at the bottom of the pool. He was pulled from the pool by a 17-year-old girl who was also attending the party.
Garden Grove police Lt. Ben Stauffer says the victim was transported to a hospital, where he was declared dead.
The incident is under investigation by police and the coroner’s office.
DEER ESCAPES BACKYARD SWIMMING POOL IN LA: LOS ANGELES (AP) — A small deer learned very quickly that it could swim after falling into a backyard swimming pool in Los Angeles.
KCBS-TV reports the little buck jumped a 7-foot fence in Encino on Saturday and got caught up in the pool’s cover.
The homeowner and two neighbors were able to pull the cover off and the deer swam and flailed around while trying to climb out.
After several attempts the deer was able to wriggle his way back onto dry land.
A spokeswoman for the state Department of Fish and Wildlife says the deer was tranquilized and transported to Malibu Creek State Park, where it was released.
GUNFIRE ERUPTS OUTSIDE PICO RIVERA CHUCK E. CHEESE: PICO RIVERA (AP) — Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials say nobody was hurt when gunfire erupted outside a Chuck E. Cheese’s restaurant, shattering windows and sending people fleeing.
City News Service reports the shots broke out Sunday night when two men apparently got into a dispute outside the restaurant in Pico Rivera.
Sgt. Sandy Crosthwaite says one of the men was seen driving off in a dark-colored car.
Investigators will review surveillance video in the hopes of identifying the men or capturing the car’s license plate number.
Several windows of the pizzeria and children’s fun center were shattered and at least two others had what appeared to be bullet holes.
A customer at the restaurant for her daughter’s seventh birthday says she hit the floor when she heard glass crashing and began looking for her kids.
