• 8 RESCUED FROM FISHING BOAT OFF SAN FRANCISCO: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard in San Francisco says eight people were rescued from a troubled charter fishing boat while the captain stayed aboard to plug the leak.
The Coast Guard says in a statement that its San Francisco sector received a mayday call that a fishing boat with nine people aboard was taking on water near Duxbury Reef.
A commercial fishing boat called the Superfish arrived and safely removed seven passengers and later a crewmember while the Coast Guard helped the captain plug the leak.
The boat was towed to San Francisco’s Pier 45. No one was injured.
• UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA SIGNS MAJOR SOLAR DEAL: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The University of California says it has made one of the largest ever solar-energy purchases by a university system in the United States.
The UC system, one of the largest public university systems in the nation, says the deal will provide enough solar power to offset 60 percent of the electricity use at five of the state’s 10 campuses, as well as some university medical centers.
UC electricity manager Mark Byron said Monday that a 25-year deal with San Mateo-based Frontier Renewables will provide 80 megawatts in solar power, or 200,000 megawatt-hours annually.
The schools say they have a projected goal of becoming carbon-neutral across the system by 2025. That means reducing its net emission of climate-changing carbon to zero.
• OAKLAND SCHOOL SLAYING SUSPECT INDICTED: OAKLAND (AP) — Prosecutors say a grand jury has indicted a man accused of killing seven people at a small Northern California Christian college.
The Alameda County district attorney’s office announced Monday that the grand jury on Aug. 22 indicted One Goh on seven counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder in the 2012 shooting rampage at Oikos University in Oakland.
A judge ruled last year that the 45-year-old Goh is not mentally fit to stand trial after doctors diagnosed him with paranoid schizophrenia. The indictment means Goh can go straight to trial if he’s later found competent.
Authorities say Goh planned the spree at the school that caters to Korean immigrants after a tuition dispute.
• PROSECUTOR REMOVED OVER AFFAIR: SAN JOSE (AP) — A Northern California deputy district attorney has been removed from a criminal prosecution after officials say he failed to disclose a romantic relationship with a crime lab technician.
Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Ted Kajani is no longer overseeing the prosecution of brothers David Zimmer and Robert Zimmer for the 1989 strangulation of David Zimmer’s estranged wife, Cathy.
Officials say Kajani had put the technician with whom he had an affair on the stand to testify about DNA evidence in the case.
Assistant District Attorney David Angel saidS unday there was no evidence the DNA was compromised because of the affair. But he said it created the appearance of impropriety.
• 4 INJURED IN SOUTH LOS ANGELES PARTY BUS SHOOTING: LOS ANGELES (AP) — Police say someone opened fire on a charter party bus in South Los Angeles, seriously injuring three passengers and leaving the driver with cuts to his face from broken glass.
Police Sgt. Rudy Alaniz tells City News Service someone shot at the bus that had 40 people aboard at an intersection late Sunday night.
Alaniz says it is suspected gangs are involved in the shooting and investigators are struggling to find suspects with few witnesses cooperating.
