KENNEDY MEADOWS (AP) — Sheriff’s officials have called off the search for a 78-year-old man who went missing after heading off on a planned weeklong hike in the Sierra east of Sonora.

The Tulare County Sheriff’s department began searching for Paul Turner, of San Bernardino County, on Saturday after he was reported overdue. Sheriff’s spokeswoman Megan Rapozo says a friend dropped Turner off in the Kennedy Meadows area on May 22. Turner was going to hike the Pacific Crest Trail and come out in the Horseshow Meadow area of Inyo County on Friday morning, but never showed up.

Rapozo says search and rescue crews walked the trail and talked to hikers, but could not locate Turner. There was no indication he had gone off trail, so the search was called off on Sunday.
