SAN DIEGO (AP) — A San Diego Eagle Scout who admits to being competitive has reached a milestone by earning every possible Scouting merit badge.
Seventeen-year-old Patrick Barnsley has 135 badges. A scoutmaster who tracks such honors, Troy Pugh, tells U-T San Diego) that only 201 Scouts in the organization's history have won all the badges. That includes three brothers in San Diego County since 2006.
However, because the number of badges has increased over time, only 11 other Scouts have equaled Barnsley's total.
The badges are awarded for learning skills such as plumbing, archery, and bugling. Barnsley's been earning them since he was 10. To win his final badge this year, Barnsley spent $500 to be certified in scuba diving.
Now Barnsley's off to college. He wants to become an actor.
BABY FOUND DEAD IN BAKERSFIELD TRASH CAN: BAKERSFIELD (AP) — Authorities say a Kern County man made a grisly discovery while retrieving his trash can from the curb: there was a dead, naked newborn baby inside that appeared to have suffered a head wound.
Fifty-three-year-old Reggie Groves said he made the discovery on Friday morning outside his Bakersfield home.
Groves told the Bakersfield Californian (http://bit.ly/15qEJiz) that the baby still had an umbilical cord attached. The newspaper reported that he began crying during the interview and went back into his house.
The Sheriff's Office did not release the gender of the baby, but said it was just days old.
Under state law, a baby can be surrendered at any hospital emergency room or fire station within 72 hours of the child's birth with no consequences.
LA BOY, 16, SENTENCED IN SHOOTING THAT KILLED BABY: LOS ANGELES (AP) — A 16-year-old gang member has been sentenced to 90 years to life in prison for killing a 1-year-old boy who was shot as the toddler lay in his father's arms on a South Los Angeles street.
Donald Ray Dokins was convicted in April of first-degree murder for the shooting last June.
City News Service reports jurors also found true gun and gang allegations against Dokins, who was 15 at the time of the crime but was charged as an adult.
Prosecutors say Dokins rode up on a bicycle and opened fire on a crowd standing outside a South LA home.
Angel Cortez Nava was fatally shot in the stomach as his father cradled him. The father, 24-year-old Mauro Cortez, was hit in the shoulder.
Authorities say the shooting was gang-related but Cortez wasn't in a gang.
POLICE: POT SHOP CO-OWNER TORTURED BY PARTNER: RIVERSIDE (AP) — Police say the co-owner of a shuttered Riverside marijuana dispensary was kidnapped for three days and tortured by his former business associates.
The victim met with his business partner and supplier last week to settle debts.
Sgt. Dan Russell says the supplier and one of the co-owners overpowered the victim, who police declined to identify. The man was allegedly kidnapped, burned, assaulted with a stun gun and tied up on June 13.
The kidnappers didn't seek ransom, but told the victim his family would be killed if he involved the authorities.
He was able to free himself and call police three days later.
Police have arrested 29-year-old supplier Joshua Richard Andro and 32-year-old co-owner David Pomee on suspicion of the crimes.
FLEEING CAR STRIKES BUS IN LA, INJURING 2 CHILDREN : LOS ANGELES (AP) — A car being chased by police has struck a bus in South Los Angeles, slightly injuring two children.
Police Officer Bruce Borihanh says an officer tried to stop the car around 10:45 a.m. Friday but it took off. He says the chase lasted about 40 seconds before the car hit a private bus carrying 50 children on an outing.
Borihanh says two children complained of pain. They were examined and then released to their parents.
