Students arriving back at Sierra High School this week might not notice the upgrade that the campus received over the summer.
But it’s a major one.
Tonight, the Manteca Unified Board of Education will vote to formally accept the completion of a reroofing job that overhauled both the flat and sloped roofing surfaces of the 23-year-old campus. The project cost the district almost $900,000 to complete.
Funding for the overhaul, which was completed as two separate projects, came from Community Facilities District 3 – money that is generated through special property tax assessments levied against homeowners living within the district for the purpose of constructing and maintaining schools within those boundaries.
According to the staff report prepared for the board, the district paid just over $214,000 to Advanced Roofing Inc. to have the built-up roofs over the small gymnasium building, the performing arts building replaced with materials that are expected to last between 25 and 30 years.
The second portion of the project, which cost the district just over $683,000, overhauled the roof on the large gymnasium building – which includes the cafeteria and boy’s locker room – as well as three blocks of classrooms. The small gymnasium, which also includes the girl’s locker room and the campus weight room, was also included in this project to overhaul certain sloped roofs, as was the performing arts building.
The materials used for the sloped roofs, according to a roof inspection report included in the staff documents, is expected to last between 40 and 45 years.
In order to accept the completion of both projects, which were completed concurrently, the board must pass separate resolutions which, once approved, will require the remainder of the balance to be paid to the contractors who completed the work.
Both a certified roofing inspector and Aaron Bowers, the district’s Director of Facilities and Operations, have inspected and approved the completion of the project.
