George S. Rose Jr., born Feb 11, 1947 passed away unexpectedly in Stockton on March 22, 2009 at St. Joseph’s Medical Center after a short illness.
George was raised in Lathrop by his mother Theresa Rose (deceased). His father was the late George S. Rose Sr.
He attended Lathrop Elementary School and graduated from Manteca High School in 1965. George met the love of his life, Jessica Wood, from Manteca, and they were later married at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. They were set to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary on May 10 of this year. George and Jessica had two daughters, Brandi and Brooke, whom George was very proud of and was very involved with their activities and sports.
While raising his family in Manteca, George worked for Libbey Owens Ford Company. He retired after 30 years in October of 1995. He also proudly served as a volunteer and reserve firefighter for Manteca Fire Department for numerous years. George enjoyed many sports and played softball and fast pitch into his adult years. He enjoyed bowling and participated in league and tournament play. He served on the Recreation Athletic Committee and Athletic Commission as well as served on several boards for Manteca Recreation Department for over 20 years where he also worked as an umpire for softball games.
After spending his retirement days taking up his new-found love of golf, George became eager for a new challenge. He was also tired of ‘watching the grass grow so he could mow it’, and began working for Manteca Unified School District as a campus monitor. While working for them, as well as with each new adventure, George met wonderful people of whom many became close friends. He also loved the students at Manteca High and treated them as if they were his own. George, Georgie, Dad, and Paca as he was known to many, will be greatly missed and was loved so deeply. He loved to joke around, laugh and truly enjoyed life. Most people described him as a ‘great man’ and ‘such a good guy’! He was always piddling around looking for ways to improve things, make them better or just ‘fix’ them.
He loved attending his daughters’ events and softball games. George accompanied Brooke while she played women’s fast pitch traveling as far as Alabama. He was such a great supporter of his grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Aimee, and all of their activities. He enjoyed helping them whether it was with their horses, sports or camping. He definitely won the ‘Greatest Dad and Paca’ award! George was also an animal lover! He will be missed by his adored cat Robo who followed him around like a dog. Many times, George would take care of his granddogs (Scooby and Brodie) when his daughter Brandi and her family were traveling and enjoyed every moment with them. He will be remembered as a caring, loving, giving man, husband, father, uncle, son, brother-in-law and friend. He will remain in our hearts forever. George leaves behind his beloved wife, Jessica, of Manteca, daughter Brooke Rose, of Stockton, daughter Brandi Rose and son-in-law, Kenneth Marsh, grandchildren Kaitlyn Joanne and Aimee Elizabeth, all of Ripon. Sister, Dee Clair of Stockton, mother-in-law, Joanne Wood (wife of late Wrenn Wood) of Manteca, sisters-in-law Mary Campbell (Dan) and Peggy Avalos both of Stockton, and many nieces and nephews as well as their respective families. George also leaves behind many great friends he made throughout his life including his childhood friend from the first grade, Tommie Taberna, with whom he and George remained the best of friends and like brothers for the last 55 years.
A memorial visitation will be held today, Wednesday, March 25, from 5 to 7 p.m. at P.L. Fry & Son Funeral Home, 290 N. Union Road, Manteca. A Celebration of Life Vigil in remembrance of George will follow visitation and will begin at 7 p.m.. Mass will be held on Thursday, March 26, at 3 p.m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 505 E. North St., Manteca.
Final resting place will follow on Friday, March 27, 2 p.m. at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, 17871 S. Carrolton Rd., Escalon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Manteca High School, St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and American Cancer Society.
Our love and gratitude go out to everyone who loved George and helped in this most difficult time. We will always remember him as the type of person who would always lend a helping hand; the best way to remember George is to do something kind for someone when they least expect it.
