Manuel de Sousa Dutra, 75, passed peacefully away on Monday, April 13, 2009.  He was born Jan. 18, 1934 in Faial, Acores, Portugal. He lived in Faial until April of 1956 when he left to Galt, Canada. There he married the love of his life, Maria Alice dos Santos on Dec. 11, 1960.

In September 1961 they had their first of three children, Alice. Anthony arrived in November of 1962, and finally in January 1966, Anna arrived. The family they had dreamed of together was now complete. During Manuel’s stay in Canada he was involved with the Portuguese band, Banda Portuguesa Clubo de Galt.

Manuel moved his family to Fremont, CA, in 1971, and began working for Peterbilt. He soon joined the Teamsters local union of Newark, and was a member for over 35 years. Mr. Dutra continued his work there until retiring in 1995. Retired life kept him very busy as he was involved with the Filarmonica Uniao Portugesa de Santa Clara; serving as their president until starting the Filarmonica Recreio do Emigrante Portugues band in Newark; also serving two terms as the president. He also became involved with S.E.S. Co. #8 of Newark, where he served as a chairman on the board of directors and with the Luso American Council 19B of Newark. In June of 1998, Manuel & Maria moved to Manteca, where once again he became active in his local community working with S.H.A.R.P. as a volunteer.

Manuel loved so much in life; he cherished his family and friends, always holding them dear to his heart. As a young child and through his golden years he enjoyed riding his bicycle, working in the garden and the great outdoors. He leaves behind his loving wife of 48 years, Maria Dutra, and his three wonderful children; Alice Silva & husband Jose of Fremont, Anthony Dutra & wife Linda of Roseville, and Anna Alexander & husband Kevin of Manteca. He was also blessed with five grandchildren; Christina, Stephanie, Michael, Jose and Andrina. Two brothers; Jose Dutra of Canada and Tony Dutra of Los Banos and other extended family members. Manuel will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

A Prayer service will be held in his honor on Saturday, April 25, 2009, 12 noon at P.L. Fry & Son Funeral Home, 290 North Union Road, Manteca. Arrangements are under the direction of P.L. Fry & Son Funeral Home, an online guestbook is also available at www.plfryandson.com.
