Loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Maria Alda Azevedo, passed away suddenly but peacefully at the age of 94 on the early morning of Monday, June 29, 2009 at her ranch home in Escalon, California.

Marie was a life-long resident of this area. She was born on August 12, 1914 in Newman, California, to her Portuguese immigrant parents, Joe and Maria Ornells.  Her parents moved to Manteca and Ripon where she attended local schools. In June, 1941, she married Arthur V. Azevedo at St. Anthony’s Church in Manteca, and lived on the family ranch on Allen Road in Escalon for more than 68 years until her passing.

She was active in the Portuguese community in Ripon and served as the Queen in 1934 of the Ripon FESM celebration.  She was a member of St. Patrick’s Church.  She hosted with her husband, Arthur, a Celebration on Trinity Sunday for many years and Novena to honor the Blessed Trinity.  It was attended by hundreds of friends, and was an example of her hard work and devotion to her faith.

Marie’s greatest gift was unconditional love for her family and her devoted hard work ethic.  Her greatest memory to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was her joy, positive commitment to life, and her smile and personal warmth and kindness.

Gardening, baking, and cooking traditional Portuguese meals were her special skills. The warmth of her holiday dinners and gatherings were a joy and will always be remembered by her family and friends.

She is survived by her sons, Arthur Azevedo, Jr. and his wife Susan of Modesto, and David Azevedo and his wife Elaine of Modesto, her younger sister Madeline Ornells of Ripon and her younger brother Louis Ornells of Modesto.  She is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Michael Azevedo, Julie Sousa, Ross Trent, Jill Mautino and Vanessa Miller, and 6 great-grandchildren.

Marie was preceded in death on September 16, 1994 by her husband Arthur.  She was also preceded in death by her devoted parents, Joe and Maria Ornells, and loving sisters Margaret Ornells, Pauline Vieira, Lenore Jacques, and her brother Joe Ornells, Jr.
