For the first time in recent memory, Manteca is 0-2 to start a season.

The Buffaloes faced another formidable opponent on the road Friday, yielding to Buchanan in Clovis, 56-34.

Manteca had no answer for the Bears (2-1), who are ranked No. 4 in the Central Section by MaxPreps after scoring 55-plus points in each of their first three games. They waxed Golden West 63-27 in their opener but forfeited the win for using an ineligible player.

Receiver Gannon Sever scored five touchdowns for Buchanan, four of them receiving. Carvell Wafer Jr. added one rushing touchdown and another on a kickoff return.

The Bears began to separate midway through the second quarter after Manteca failed to convert on a fourth-and-goal that could have tied it at 14-14 if successful.

The quick-striking Buchanan attack instead took a two-score lead and went into halftime ahead, 28-14.

Manteca had its share of offensive standouts, while piling up 444 yards.

Nikko Juarez rushed for 167 yards and two touchdowns on 24 attempts to go with a 35-yard touchdown reception.

Quarterback Brody Carabello completed 20 of 27 passes with an interception but connected with twins Jayden (nine receptions, 135 yards) and Jaylin Harris (eight receptions, 52 yards) once each for touchdowns.

Manteca welcomes Chavez (1-1) for its home opener this Friday

Placer 14, Ripon 7

In Auburn, Ripon (1-1) shut out the Hillmen (2-0) for the final three quarters, but two touchdowns were enough for the home team.

Placer scored on a 21-yard touchdown run from Jesiah Aday and Cole Atwood’s 40-yard pass to Ryan Alonso.

Ripon’s defense held from there and even provided the lone touchdown in the opening minutes of the second half when Josiah Perez recovered a fumble near the Placer goal line and scored on the short return.

Ripon hosts Pitman (2-0) on Friday.
