Jacob Hernandez (11 carries, 183 yards) got the ball rolling on the Buffaloes’ first play with a 79-yard touchdown run. He later added scoring jaunts of 10 and 18 yards.
With Hernandez using his speed to elude the Knights, teammate Kaden MacDannald (17 carries, 127 yards) repeatedly ran over the Downey defense, scoring on 2-, 2- and 8-yard runs. MacDannald also had a 24-yard highlight-reel reception, leaping over the defender to not only prevent an interception but make the catch.
Hernandez led the defense with seven tackles, a tipped pass and an interception. Eddie McDuffie (interception), MacDannald and Manuel Ramirez had four stops apiece and Andrew DeFrenchi (interception) and Daniel Bernal (forced fumble) both made three tackles.
Colin Nillson scored on a 12-yard run for Downey. Sunnie Hartzell added a 1-yard scoring plunge and Jaxen Rowland pulled in a 4-yard touchdown pass from Joseph Ramirez. The Knights defense added two safeties.
East Union 16, Ripon 8
Carson Sanders made two big plays for the Lancers in the fourth quarter.
Sanders (7 of 19 passing, 81 yards; 12 carries, 79 yards) ran in a score in the final period and he ended the game with an interception. T.J. Agueda scored for East Union in the third period and Orian German made an interception.
German made five catches for 78 yards.
