Manteca scored 20 consecutive second-half points to pull away and defeat visiting Downey 40-22 in non-league junior varsity action on Friday at Guss Schmiedt Field.

Jacob Hernandez (11 carries, 183 yards) got the ball rolling on the Buffaloes’ first play with a 79-yard touchdown run. He later added scoring jaunts of 10 and 18 yards.

With Hernandez using his speed to elude the Knights, teammate Kaden MacDannald (17 carries, 127 yards) repeatedly ran over the Downey defense, scoring on 2-, 2- and 8-yard runs. MacDannald also had a 24-yard highlight-reel reception, leaping over the defender to not only prevent an interception but make the catch.

Hernandez led the defense with seven tackles, a tipped pass and an interception. Eddie McDuffie (interception), MacDannald and Manuel Ramirez had four stops apiece and Andrew DeFrenchi (interception) and Daniel Bernal (forced fumble) both made three tackles.

Colin Nillson scored on a 12-yard run for Downey. Sunnie Hartzell added a 1-yard scoring plunge and Jaxen Rowland pulled in a 4-yard touchdown pass from Joseph Ramirez. The Knights defense added two safeties.
