The East Union Lancers showed yet again Friday night that they are one of the most dynamic offenses in the area in a 55-7 route of Enochs Friday night to move to 4-0 overall as they head into league play next week.

The Lancers (4-0) have now put up 255 points in four games, while allowing just 50.

“We played well tonight, definitely up to the standard we set for these guys,” East Union head coach Jason Stock said. “We still have a few things to clean up, but we wanted to be 4-0 going into league play and we’ve done that.”

East Union, known for its air attack, saw great success on the ground against the Eagles (1-3) to the tune of 267 yards on 29 carries. The Lancers were led by senior running back Brayden Camara, who amassed 187 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries.

“First and foremost, I have to give thanks to my offensive line, they were huge tonight,” Camara said. “Some of those holes I was running through were massive, and I don’t have anywhere near the game I had tonight without them putting in the work up front.

Camara helped the Lancers get off to a hot start in the contest, capping the opening drive on a 14-yard touchdown run to put East Union up 7-0 less than two minutes in.

Just three minutes of game time later, Offensive Coordinator Teejay Gordon’s passing game got on the board, as Kirk Simoni found Jackson Fay from 40 yards out to go up 14-0. Simoni would finish the night going 7-for-8 with for 148 yards and two touchdowns. Like the first three weeks of the season, the senior Fay was Simoni’s favorite target, as he caught five passes for 112 yards to go along with his early touchdown.

Stock challenged his defense coming into the match-up, and it became clear early on that his unit responded. On Enochs’ second drive of the night, senior defensive lineman Erick Cortez took a tipped pass from the Enoch’s quarterback 65 yards for an interception return for a touchdown to put East Union up 20-0 a little over five minutes into the game. The interception would be the first of four on the night for the Lancers. Anthony Oteri picked off an Enochs deep ball in the second quarter, and fellow linebacker Chris Gallego came up with a pair of huge interceptions that contributed to immediate touchdowns by the Lancer offense to put the game away.

“This was probably the best offense we’ve played so far this season, and we came out and answered the challenge put in front of us,” Gallego said. “We know that if we’re going to accomplish what we want to this year, that the defense is going to have to play like we did tonight.”

The defense held Enochs to just 11 yards total on the ground, and didn’t allow a point until a controversial targeting penalty extended an Enochs drive late in the fourth while the teams played under a running clock.

For Stock and the Lancers, a 4-0 start was a goal, but not the goal.

“We know things will start to pick up for us heading into league play next week against Sierra,” Stock said. “That’s a really good football team with some really good athletes that will come in here, and (Sierra) coach (Jeff) Abrew always has his guys ready to play.”

East Union’s senior leader in the backfield echoed his coach’s sentiments heading into Valley Oak League play.

“We need to make sure we take the rest of our schedule one game at a time,” Camara said. “Sierra is next for us, so we’ll get to work this week coaches will come up with a game plan and hopefully we can execute it like we did tonight.”

Kickoff for homecoming at Dino Cunial Stadium against Sierra will take place at 7 p.m. Friday.
