Sierra High coach Jeff Harbison refers to this time of year as the "pre-league" part of the schedule.

And for good reason — the games such as Friday's 41-21 loss to Stagg High will still go on the record.

In his second game back at the helm for the Timberwolves, he did discover that his players will battle.

"Our kids are competitive. It may not show up on the scoreboard, but they fought to the end," Harbison said.

Stagg's victory made Don Norton the winningest coach in the school's six-decade-plus history.

Sierra (0-2) displayed promise, in particular, during the first half of the game played at Daniel Teicheira Memorial Stadium.

Junior running back Anthony Grady was the workhorse. He effectively ran out of the Jumbo package, taking the direct snap from center and fighting his way through the Delta Kings' defense.

He finished with a game-high 160 rushing yards on 34 carries, accounting for all three of his team's touchdowns.

Stagg (1-1) relied on its passing game led by senior quarterback Jerry Rigumidin, who completed 16 of his 22 passes for 284 yards and five TDs.

The Delta Kings scored first, taking advantage of the short kick at the onset and driving 59 yards on 10 plays. Rigumidin capped it off with a 4-yard score to Adam Taylor, who was just getting warmed up.

The Timberwolves got into a rhythm on their second drive, keeping the ball on the ground. Grady plowed his way into the end zone and Paul Barrios delivered on the extra-point kick to give his team a 7-6 lead.

Stagg continued to rely on Rigumidin's passing and Herman Mitchell's running.

Rigumidin found Adams again, connecting with his favorite target on a 41-yard scoring play to put the Delta Kings back up, 12-7.

Sierra engineered another scoring drive with quarterback Arjan Birdi keeping the drive alive by hitting Izayah Houston on a big third-down play. Grady scored from the 2 and Barrios' PAT kick put the Timberwolves ahead once again, 14-12.

Stagg went ahead for good shortly before the half as Rigumidin found Josh Chavez on the 4-yard scoring toss.

The Delta Kings added some insurance in the third with Mitchell scoring on a 19-yard run and Rigumidin connecting with Taylor on a 93-yard pass.

Down 34-14, Sierra continued to battle. Grady capped an 11-play drive by scoring his third touchdown of the game from 6 yards out.

Rigumidin capped off his stellar out by finding tight end Ronald Green at the midfield. He did the rest from there, racing to the end zone to 83-yard pass play.
