3rd doubles team lifts Cougars to 1st win of season

STOCKTON — Weston Ranch tallied its first win of the Valley Oak League season on Thursday, edging visiting East Union 5-4 thanks to a clutch win from the No. 3 doubles team.

Jesmeen Kaur and Jella Batac warded off East Union’s Carmen Tantaros and Sarah Coohoon, 6-3, 7-6 (5). The Cougars, now 1-5, got another point from the No. 2 tandem Rachael Mays and Kim Phan, who squeaked past Leighlani Sablan and Samantha Velasquez, 6-4, 7-5.

“We lost to EU last time 5-4 and it was good to come back win 5-4,” Weston Ranch coach Ron Bylow said. “Everyone played great in this win and we continue to improve. We have lost a couple of matches 5-4 and we are hoping to turn those into wins in the second half of the season.”

Weston Ranch and East Union (1-5) split the singles matches. Top Lancer Fuko Inove claimed the No. 1 singles match handily, 6-0, 6-1. Cynthia and Marilyn Civil won the fifth and sixth singles contests with 6-4, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-3 scores. Hailey Gosney and Nicole Meza prevailed 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles for East Union’s final point.

Weston Ranch was victorious in the only three-set match of the day, as No. 3 Kamrynne Nillo outlasted Mandi Weberg, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Alyssa Ryan (6-3, 6-2) and Jasdeep Hothi (6-4, 6-4) also won their singles matches.

 

Manteca 9, Kimball 0

First-place Manteca (6-0, 8-1) made quick work of the visiting Jaguars, as No. 6 singles player Makenna Condit and No. 1 and 3 doubles tandems Rav Dhillon/Navina Mann and Monica Lozano/Prerna Singh came up with 6-0, 6-0 shutouts.

Taylor Corona (6-3, 6-2), Koryn Menasco (6-2, 6-1), Julia Tang (6-1, 6-3), Stephania Mercado (6-2, 6-0) and Gladis Sandoval (6-2, 6-0) won decisively in their singles matches. No. 2 doubles partners Julianne Eavenson and Noeli Mercado contributed a 6-3, 6-1 win.

 

Sierra 8, Lathrop 1

LATHROP — The Timberwolves improved to 5-1 with their dominant win.

Kaitlin Rausa (6-2, 6-0), Claire Banks (6-0, 6-1), Nadia Petrovic (6-0, 6-0), Sydney Huynh (6-3, 6-2) and Alyssa Patterson (6-4, 6-0) were Sierra’s singles winners. Earning straight-set victories in doubles action were Alejandra Pacheco/Krista Harris (6-2, 6-2), Louisa Hunter/Natalie Rootaert (6-2, 6-1) and Sophia Gunzon/Xochitl Torres (6-2, 6-0).

Lathrop No. 4 singles player Eden Baca prevented the shutout with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph.
