ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Collins Schluer, Sierra water polo

Schluer and the Timberwolves had a busy and productive week, winning four of five games in four days.

Last Wednesday, Sept. 6, they hosted Tracy and rolled to a 19-6 non-league victory. Sierra surged to an 8-0 lead in the first period, with Schluer scoring four of his eight goals in the quarter.

On Friday and Saturday, Sierra competed in the Sierra Shootout Tournament held at Sierra College in Rocklin. The T’wolves placed third in the bronze division, going 3-1. Schluer led the team with 14 goals overall.

He came up big in the opener against Granada, netting three of his five goals in the first quarter as the T’wolves shot out to an early 5-1 lead. The Matadors from Livermore rallied to tie it at 8-8 in the fourth, but Schluer fired the game-winner with 2:29 remaining.

Sierra was on opposite ends of blowouts in its next two outings, routing Laguna Creek 16-3 before running out of steam in a 20-9 setback against Livermore. Schluer accounted for eight goals in all.

In the finale Saturday against Freedom, Schluer provided an important insurance goal to make it 4-1 early in the third period. The Timberwolves held on to win 6-3 to secure third place.
