For the second straight year, Manteca High’s Hailie Kim faced a reigning champion in the final round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II Individual Tournament at Johnson Ranch Racquet Club in Roseville.
The sophomore finally met her match.
On Friday, Rodriguez senior Emily Wong handed the top-seeded Kim her first high school loss 2-6, 6-1, 10-8 in the championship round. Wong, seeded second, is a three-time section champion in doubles.
After knocking off her first two opponents with 6-0, 6-0 scores on Thursday, Kim took on Tokay’s Chloe Lowe in the semifinals Friday morning, rolling to a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
In last year’s title round, Kim knocked off then-defending champion Ella Fuchs of Roseville in a battle of unbeatens that ended in three thrilling sets.
With the loss to Wong, Kim is now 28-1 for the season but still has at least one more to go, as the Buffaloes face defending SJS Division III champion Placer in a team playoff semifinal on Monday.
