Buffaloes keep Lathrop waiting

The Lathrop Spartans boys basketball team had reason to believe they were possibly going to snatch their first Valley Oak League win, but the Manteca Buffaloes chose to keep head coach J.J. Ramirez and the Spartans waiting in a 48-44 win at Lathrop Wednesday.

The Spartans (0-11 VOL, 2-20 overall) were in the mix until EJ Godfrey decided to play, leading the Buffaloes on a 21-10 second half run behind a pair of 3-pointers. Godfrey led all scorers with 18 points, while teammate BJ Odell finished the league win with 10.

“We played a great 30 minutes of basketball,” Lathrop head coach Ramirez said. “We were able to put some offense on the board and pretty much battle back the entire game.

“I was definitely pleased with the way we played.”

Manteca got off to another sluggish start, collecting just six points in the opening period, before getting things going with a 15-point second.

Lathrop was led by Marcus Conley’s 15 points, followed by teammate Ricky Chavez’ 13.

Things will not get any easier for the Spartans Friday as they roll out the welcome mats for the Sierra Timberwolves, who are coming off of a 60-49 win over the Oakdale Mustangs. The Buffaloes will be back on the court Friday as well, when they travel to Oakdale to take on the Mustangs.
