While a lot of people would have been upset having lost by such a large margin, Lathrop High coach Ed Fang was actually pleased with the performance of his girls on the road at Manteca Tuesday night.

At one key point in the second quarter, Lathrop – which didn’t score its first field goal until a minute was left in the first quarter – put a run together that prompted Manteca High head coach Andrea Hiatt to put her starters back in the game and keep on the aggressive press that makes her playoff-bound team so dominant.

Knowing that his girls didn’t give up in the 70-30 was enough for Fang.

“Our girls don’t stop regardless of who it is that we’re playing, and I think that you could see that out there tonight,” he said. “Not having our leading scorer (Jasmine Elder) tonight here I think hurt us, but I know that you can’t make excuses. Manteca is a good team and I think that they will do well in the playoffs.”

With the exception of that one mini run in the second quarter, the game was all Manteca all night as the Buffaloes seemingly dominated every aspect of the game.

Sharon Washington, who led Manteca (10-1, 19-3) in scoring with 19 points, seemed to be all over the floor with three assists and three steals as well as a block and a pair of rebounds to help Manteca keep possession of the ball.

Twice she stepped in front of Lathrop (1-10, 3-19) passes and took them to the basket for easy layups, and twice she dished the ball at the last second to a fellow player for an assist – with the majority of her dominance coming in Manteca’s 29-point third quarter showing.

Hiatt said her girls were prepared for Tuesday’s game and weren’t looking for anything easy from the school that has seniors for the first time this year.

“Ed Fang is a great coach and I knew that he was going to have them ready when they came in to play tonight, and he definitely did,” she said. “I felt like we played well tonight, but at a point there in the first half some of our shots weren’t going in and Lathrop had started to score a little bit. In that third quarter we must have erupted because those shots started falling.”

Tia Tuuga finished the game with 12 points for Manteca High, while Mikayla Hasal finished with 11 points.

Lathrop sophomore Janet Visaya finished with 12 points, while Krystal Ruiz contributed with seven points.

Manteca takes the court again on Thursday when they host the Oakdale Mustangs, and Lathrop will host Sierra on Thursday as well.
