TRACY — The Manteca High softball team took to the road Saturday and swept West of Tracy in a pair of mercy rule wins, 15-4 in five innings and followed that with a 19-8 six-inning win.
Kayla Ching led the Buffaloes (2-0) in the opener, going 3 for 4 with four RBI, three runs, a home run and a double. Alyssah Harnden (2 for 3, two runs), Koryn Menasco (2 for 4, run), Ashley Pease (run), Isabella Gonzales (run) and Rhiannon Genilla each had an RBI for Manteca.
Kaylee MacDannald (2 for 3, double, three runs) and Kaileah Johansen (two RBI) each added a double and Vanessa Lopez (2 for 4) scored twice for the Buffaloes.
Menasco went the distance in the circle, allowing two hits while striking out two.
Johannsen knocked in five runs in the second game, going 2 for 6 with a pair of runs and a double. Genilla (3 for 4, two runs) and Harnden (run) both doubled and knocked in three runs, Lopez (2 for 3, two runs) and Gonzales (3 for 5, three runs) each added a pair of RBI and Ching (double), Menasco, and Ella Washburn all had an RBI apiece. MacDannald went 2 for 6.
Harnden (eight hits, two strikeouts) and Menasco (four hits) pitched three innings apiece.
“It was a very unique to start the season with a double header on the road,” Buffaloes coach Josh Farris said. “But we are very pleased to come home with two wins to start off the new campaign.
“Our offense definitely carried us today. Defensively we looked out of sorts at times but it is early and we will get back to work. With four scheduled games this week our team will have to improve through in game situations, which I think is good for a young team like ours.”

STOCKTON – Rylan Tinsley threw three innings of shutout ball for the Cougars (1-0) on Saturday, notching five strikeouts. Carlos Drain hurled one strikeout in relief.
Weston Ranch coach David Hager used to coach the Aztecs (0-1).
“They are a playoff team from the Central Coast Section,” Hager said. “I coached there for five years and we try and get together for a non-league game every year.”
Austin Cappas led the Weston Ranch offense, going 2 for 3 with an RBI, a run and two stolen bases. James Peavey had a bunt RBI and Amier Bowen had an RBI. Carlos Drain scored two runs.
“I am pleased how we went about our business,” Hager said. “We took care of the baseball had a good approach at the plate.”
Ripon 11, Lathrop 1
RIPON – Donny Cooksey had a monster day for the Indians (1-1), going 4 for 4 with five RBI, a triple and two doubles.
Ripon’s John Eicher pitched four strong innings, yielding one earned run and Sean McCann pitched one inning in relief, striking out two in his first varsity appearance as a sophomore.
“Very happy with how the team played today after a tough loss Friday,” Indians coach Jacob Rodriguez said. “We have a long way to go but I like where we are at week one of the season.”
The Spartans drop to 1-1.

Viking Invitational
STOCKTON – Five thinclads medaled for Ripon High on Saturday at Edison High School.
Brian Averalo was a double medalist for the Indians, winning the 3200 meters in 10 minutes, 16.33 seconds and second in the 1600 (4:48.16). Robert Battle won the 100 (11.00) and Jeremiah Robancho was third in a tight pack in the 1600 at 4:49.29.
In frosh/soph competition, Nathaniel Brown sprinted was second in the 100 (12.0) and third in the 200 (24.39) while Fidel Pitts was second in the (54.86).
In varsity girls competition, Manteca’s Monserrat Quintanar finished second in the pole vault.
The Buffaloes’ frosh/soph girls medalists were Anchaleena James (first, triple jump), Ana Marie Media (third, shot put), Grace Mejarado (third, high jump) and Heather Pang (third, pole vault).

Lathrop Tournament
Weston Ranch went 2-2, defeating Hilmar and Sierra while losing to Merced and Livermore to finish in a tie for fifth.
“We played better than expected,” Cougars coach Debi Chavez said. “Especially so early in the season.”
Sierra tallied losses to Weston Ranch, El Capitan and Livermore.
