Sarah Phillips, Anthony Melena and Josh Bird all went undefeated for East Union to help the Lancers wrap up the team portion of the Bear Creek wrestling tournament 3-2 on Friday, finishing seventh out of 14 teams.

East Union won the first two matches of pool play, defeating Franklin 52-24 and Stagg 47-33 before losing 54-21 to eventual tournament champion Enochs. The Lancers went 1-1 in the medal round, defeating Rodriguez-Fairfield 42-28 and being edged 42-40 by Central Valley.

What made East Union’s outing even more impressive was the fact that they forfeited three bouts every match.

“We gave up 18 points every match,” Lancers coach A.J. Reindel said. “These tournaments can be very grueling and emotional.

“But we wrestled as a team and supported each other. It is early in the year and we are learning that we have a lot of work to do.”

At 106 pounds, Phillips went 5-0 and posted three pins and a technical fall. Melena (220) and Byrd (285) both had four pins with Melena going 5-0 and Byrd 4-0.

Peter Barrington (132) and Jesus Vasquez (145) were each 4-1 for East Union.

The tournament switches formats today and adds more teams with both a boys’ and a girls’ individual tournament.
