RIPON – Down 15-0 in the first quarter against a tough Summerville squad, Ripon battened down the hatches behind quarterback Alex Gustin and rode the offensive line to a hard-fought 32-23 win.

The Indians took their first lead at 20-15 early in the third.

Gustin broke off a huge touchdown run, and the Ripon offensive line took control of trenches in the fourth, sealing the win.

Ripon moved to 2-0 with the victory and faces another tough test in Argonaut next week.

Bradshaw Christian 48, Ripon Christian 7

In Sacramento, it was a tough night for the Knights, as Bradshaw returned 18 starters of its 2008 squad and was thirsty for revenge.

Bradshaw got the win the Knights earned a year ago and then some, as the home squad rumbled for 458 yards on the ground and scored in each quarter played.

Tyler Voogd hooked up with Isaac Norman for a 45-yard touchdown that made it 7-7 midway through the first, but it was all Bradshaw from there.

“They beat us up inside,” RC head coach John Vander Schaaf said. “They were the bigger of the two teams, by far.”

Josiah Neeley finished with 23 tackles, and Landon Tillema added 11 more.

Jonathan Israel and Aaron Fay had 10 each.

“Josiah and Landon had good games,” Vander Schaaf said. “It’s great that we didn’t get down on ourselves out there, but they were finding the holes in our defense and exploiting them.”

Ripon Christian (1-1) returns home for a meeting with Waterford next Saturday.
