Late collapse costs Cougars

TRACY – The Weston Ranch Cougars put themselves in position to continue along the winner’s bracket path of the 21st Annual Tracy Winter Holiday Basketball Tournament, but an offensive letdown final period left tthem on the short end of a 61-51 final against Vallejo High.

“It really wasn’t that much about our defense as it was about our offense,” Cougar head coach Ryan Bono said. “We had 25 turnovers in the game and we saved 13 of those for the fourth quarter.”

Simple tasks like passing the basketball and moving through the offensive progressions proved too difficult over the final eight minutes of play.

Weston Ranch (2-5) outscored the Apaches in all of the first three quarters, but a four-point effort in the fourth gave Vallejo the win and pushed Weston ranch into the loser’s bracket.

“All of a sudden we just stopped attacking on the offensive end,” Bono said. “We started dribbling too much and the mental aspects just went away.
“They started trapping us and for some reason we just got soft with the ball.”

Vallejo (8-2) will face the winner of the Tracy-Turlock game, with the Cougars meeting up with the loser of that contest at 4:30 p.m. Weston Ranch was led by Melvin Allen’s 15-point outing, followed by Nate Moises’ 10-point, eight-rebound performance.

Ronnie Collins helped on the glass, pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with four points. CharRay Poole and Griffin Alexander both finished with nine.

Enochs 60, Lathrop 22
The Tracy Winter Holiday Tournament has been anything but pleasant for the Spartans, dropping their second contest of the tournament 60-22 to Enochs.

Lathrop (0-9) was led by Umar Muriset’s 10 points, followed by a seven-point outing from J.D. Singh. Lathrop will have two more chances to earn a tournament win, as well as its first of the season, when they continue tournament action against the Stagg Delta Kings today at 4:30 p.m. The Spartans opened their 2009 season against the Delta Kings at Lathrop, falling 64-18 in their initial meeting.
