Manteca High relied on a strong pitching performance from Daniel Miramontes and a few timely base hits to handle the Lathrop Spartans in a 7-2 Valley Oak League win Wednesday.

Miramontes tossed a complete game, two-hitter for the Buffaloes, surrendering two runs, walking two and striking out 10. Miramontes also made significant contributions from the batter’s box, going 2 for 5 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored.

Preston Rizo was on the hill for the Spartans, ending up with five strikeouts, but plagued by five walks.

“Manteca did a good job of taking advantage of our free passes,” Lathrop head coach Randy Baltazar said. “They were able to get at least one base runner in every inning.

“We cannot do that against this type of ball club.”

Buddy Reeder was 1 for 4 with two RBI and Nate Chivello was 2 for 4 in the win. Jake Corn had an RBI and was 2 for 3.

Austin Plunk had an RBI triple for the Spartans.

Manteca will try and close out the home-home series sweep when the two clubs meet at Manteca High Friday.

“We played good, solid baseball,” Manteca head coach Gene Ballardo said. “And hopefully we can carry that over into Friday’s game.”

Kimball 9, Weston Ranch 6

The Cougars were able to fight back and make it respectable, but Kimball’s early offense was too much for the Cougars in their VOL loss Wednesday.

The Cougars trailed 9-0 through the first six innings, before mounting a late comeback with three in the sixth and another three in the seventh. The late rally would be too late as the Cougars ended the game with the bases loaded.

Cody Simmerly drove in two for Weston Ranch and Tyler Scharnow was 1 for 4 with an RBI.

Oakdale 8, Sierra 1

The Timberwolves jumped out to a 1-0 lead with one in the first, but the lead would not last.

Oakdale would score four in the second and two more in the third on its way to an 8-1 VOL win over Sierra.

The Timberwolves were held to just three hits by Oakdale starter Logan Handzlik.

Handzlik went the distance, striking out seven and walking three.

Southern League

Ripon Christian 2, Turlock Christian 1

The Knights were able to pull down a big win in Southern League play, stopping Turlock Christian with a 2-1 victory Wednesday.

Kalvin Prins was the winning pitcher, and teammate Colby DeVries came on for the save.

Sophomore

Manteca 12, Lathrop 2

Alex Garlets went six innings and scattered four hits and surrendered two runs to help Manteca cruise to an easy VOL win over Lathrop Wednesday.

Brandon Landwehr was 3 for 3 with three runs, while Austin Chapman drove in three.

East Union 8, Sonora 4

The Lancers got a complete game from Lucas Garcia to beat the visiting Sonora Wildcats Wednesday in VOL action.

Jeremy Turner was 1 for 4 but ignited a late EU rally with a triple and Garcia assisted his cause by going 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI. Garcia struck out six in his work on the mound.
