OAKDALE — The Manteca boys tennis team’s Sac-Joaquin Section playoff hopes took a hit Friday with its 5-4 loss to Oakdale.

The Buffaloes (9-4) may have a shot to advance should they beat Valley Oak League-leading Kimball at home next Monday. They dropped a 5-4 decision to the Jaguars last week but losing to Oakdale twice in the last four days may be what knocks them out of the running.

It was the fourth match in as many days for Manteca, which earned a needed 6-3 revenge win over visiting Central Catholic on Thursday. The Buffs have reached the postseason11 straight years and are the reigning SJS Division III champion. Only three VOL teams qualify.

“We didn’t have the same level of intensity throughout the match that we had (Thursday),” Manteca coach Frank Fontana said. “It has been a long week for us, and ideally we could have played them after a day off. After defeating Central Catholic we didn’t have much emotional energy left to give.”

It came down to the final two matches at No. 2 and 3 doubles. Ravpreet Grewal and Kayson Neduvakkattu pulled out a 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 win over Matt Kjeldgaard and Chris Frye. Oakdale took the third doubles match, as Brady Noel and Aaron Lowe defeated Manteca’s Ryan Foo and Kiersten Melan, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.

Solman Aniss and Kurtis Ma took care of business at the top of the ladder. Aniss remains undefeated heading into his rematch with Kimball’s Logan Le, the reigning VOL singles champion, after beating Angel Padilla, 6-0, 6-2. Ma blanked Liam Peters, 6-0, 6-0. No. 6 player Nick Pio added a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Marc Chavez.

BOYS TRACK

Sierra 68, Kimball 66

TRACY — Trailing 66-63, the Timberwolves’ mile relay team of Jerardo Salcedo, Nick Stanley, David Correa and Jesse Hurtado came through with a clutch win on Thursday, which puts Sierra in a three-way tie for first with Kimball and Oakdale.

Stanley also took first in the 110-meter hurdles and 300 hurdles. Hurtado won the 800 and 1,600. 

Kimball was victorious in frosh-soph boys, 65-40. Eric Lopez claimed the 100 and 200 for the Timberwolves.

GIRLS TRACK

Sierra 83 Kimball 53

TRACY — The Timberwolves secured at least a share of the league title with one meet remaining.

Jasmin Correa placed first in the 200 and 400 and was on the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Megan Oblin chipped in with first-place points in the 1,600 and 3,200.

Ysabella Hernandez (100, 200) and Katelyn Finnicum (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles) helped Sierra win the frosh-soph competition, 59-20.

Lathrop 72, Manteca 47

LATHROP — Julia Moreno (long jump), Jayda Jackson (high jump) and Breanna Rodriguez (3,200) were overall winners for Manteca in the VOL double dual Thursday.

Manteca’s boys tied Weston Ranch 61-61 and lost to Lathrop, 109-26.
