STOCKTON – None of the area golfers were able to walk away with medalist honors at the Bear Creek Invitational Golf Tournament at The Reserve at Spanos Park, but there were a couple of standout rounds over the 18-hole action Monday.
Ripon High walked away with an eighth place overall finish, getting another impressive outing from freshman Andrew Bonner. Bonner recorded the lowest round amongst the locals participating, shooting a 4-over-par 76 to pace the Indians.
Teammates Josh Richter (80), Jordan Williamson (84) and Zach Capel (96) fell in behind Bonner, with Nick Mendonca (99) and Matty Gay (112) rounding out the card. Gay ended with the throw out, leaving Ripon with 435 strokes.
“I’m fairly pleased with the guys,” Ripon head coach Chris Musseman said. “Our lower end is what’s hurting us the most, we don’t have consistency at that end, but I can’t argue with a freshman shooting a 76 and a junior shooting 80.
“Those kids have been solid all year.”
Williamson likely made the biggest leap, bettering his round of 113 a year ago by nearly 30 strokes.
The Valley Oak League’s East Union Lancers came in a spot ahead of the Indians, recording a seventh place overall finish in the 19-team invitational. Kyle Harmon and Will Brink both led the Lancers with rounds of 81, while Tanner Bragg (83) and Jordan Duvall (92) came in behind them. Guillermo Bajaras carded an 88 and Evan Lewis was the throw out score with a 97.
“I was a little disappointed it the score itself,” East Union head coach Dennis Wells said. “We could have shaved off 20-shots easily. We just did some silly things. Overall, I am happy with the way the guys are coming along right now.
“We’re real close to where we want to be, so I’m happy with them.”
The Manteca Buffaloes finished with a team score of 493, getting its team-low round from Nick Gonzales. Gonzales turned in a solid score of 80, forfeiting an opportunity to shoot in the 70s with a triple-bogey on the 18th hole.
“Nick shot an impressive 80 on a challenging Spanos Park golf course,” Manteca head coach David Fontanilla said. “This course is a tough one for anyone who hasn’t played it.
“All of our guys played well and hopefully the experience will benefit then in the VOL Championships.”
Manteca’s Kenny Summers shot a 91, while Casey Benson turned in a 95. Tim Baker turned in a respectable 106, while Derek Benson and Davey Tolbert both shot 121.
