Ripon High sophomores take third tournament win

MERCED — The Ripon High sophomore volleyball team claimed its third tournament championship this weekend, winning five matches at Golden Valley.

The Indians (23-1) defeated Buhach Colony of Atwater 25-20, 25-14. They also swept Atwater (25-12, 25-19) in the semifinal, and Central Catholic (25-23, 25-7) in the opening round. In pool play, Ripon cruised to victory against Modesto and Los Banos.

Setter Madison Allen led the way with 80 assists, 16 kills and four aces. Other tournament standouts include: Paige Horwood (28 kills, 10 aces), Rose Beeler (17 kills, six aces), Tyler White (19 kills, eight blocks, 12 aces), Sierra Daggett (five kills, five blocks) and Paige Burrell (46 digs, seven aces).

Manteca 2, Lathrop 0
In Lathrop, Mia Ramirez led the Buffaloes (4-3 Valley Oak League, 7-4 overall) with four kills and seven aces in the 25-17, 25-17 sweep.
Myklyn Balmut added three kills, and Jessica Reeder finished with 11 assists, seven service points and three aces.

Sierra 2, East Union 0
At Dalben Center, the visiting Timberwolves (4-3) did most of their damage from the service line, where Stephanie Davis picked up 12 service points, and Victoria Schneider added 10 to go with two aces. Sierra won 25-19, 25-20.

Kristen Piaskecki picked up six kills and six digs for East Union. Lauren Ferguson chimed in with four kills, and Alexis Steele had two aces.

Freshman

Sierra 2, East Union 0
The Timberwolves (5-2) swept 25-21, 25-18 behind Valerie Nester’s two blocks. Sarah Gullet chipped in four hits and a kill.
Ayana Hughes led the attack with five hits and a kill.
