Ripon’s Devin Fitzpatrick places 29th, breaks school record at state XC meet

Sac-Joaquin Section runner-up Devin Fitzpatrick wrapped up his outstanding senior season for Ripon this past Saturday, setting a new school record in the 36th California Interscholastic Federation State Championships.

He placed 29th out of 201 competitors in the Division IV race, finishing in 16 minutes, 4.8 seconds on the 5,000-meter course at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Also appearing at the state meet were Sierra sophomore Christian Gonzalez (16:20.1) and Manteca junior Oscar Angel (16:21.3), who came in 64th and 65th place, respectively, in Division III.

Fellow Valley Oak League member Oakdale finished second as a team in Division III boys, scoring 66 points to five-time champion Dana Hills’ 42. Three Mustangs finished in the top 10, including former Ripon student Omar Alsaidi who came in fifth (15:09.6).

There were several repeat individual and team champions in the state finale. Montgomery junior Hanne Thomsen was among the top performers, as she claimed a third straight Division III individual title.

Dana Hills junior Evan Noonan set a new Division III boys record (14:36) while cruising to his second consecutive state crown.

Sadie Engelhardt of Ventura defended her Division II girls title. JSerra Catholic’s girls and the St. Francis (La Cañada) boys repeated as Division IV state champs, while Crystal Springs’ girls won a second straight title in Division V.
