SOQUEL – It was a long trip to the California coast Friday night for the Manteca sophomore football team, but even tired legs and a sluggish start couldn’t deter the Buffaloes from picking up a season-opening win, 22-20.

Down seven at half, Anthony Hernandez (35 carries, 246 yards) turned it all around with touchdown runs of 30, 48 and five.

Alex Martinez (7-of-10 passing, 93 yards) found Danny Gouveia (5 catches, 76 yards) twice on two-point conversions to clinch the victory.

“Our offensive line really played well in the second half, and our defense came to play all night,” Manteca head coach Adam Liel said. “We learned a lot tonight and have a lot of work to do this week.”

Manteca (1-0) heads to Tracy Friday.

Beyer 41, East Union 13
Steven Gigli had an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and Gigli ran in EU’s second score after a long, sustained drive in the first half, but mental mistakes would be too much to overcome in the loss.

“What happened tonight was a direct reflection of what happened all week at practice,” EU head coach Carlos Herrera said. “We had lackadaisical, half-assed practices and it showed out here tonight.”

EU (0-1) will look to turn it around at Bear Creek Friday.

Ripon Christian 18, Delhi 6
At Stouffer Field, freshman Zach Davis led a trio of rushers with 128 yards and a TD on 10 carries. Zach Hidalgo produced 73 yards on just five carries, while Tim Ignacio chipped in 61 and a score on seven attempts.

Michael Brown contributed a touchdown run.

Quarterback James Vander Schaaf attempted just three passes and completed two of them for 45 yards with the running game doing most of the work Friday. Anton Den Dulk paced the defense with eight tackles, and Brandon Dotinga made two touchdown-preventing stops in the open field.

“The offensive line was really firing off the ball tonight,” Ripon Christian coach Michael Dotinga said. “Defensively, we played well. The d-line plugged up the middle gaps really well, forcing Delhi to bounce almost everything outside.”

Ripon 42, Linden 0
In Linden, the Indians took care of business on both sides of the ball, during a dominant first half.

Mariano Villalobos scored on an interception, recovered a fumble, and powered the ball from inside the 6 for another score. Jake McCreath also contributed to the cause with a pair of touchdowns.

“We didn’t look too inspired early in the game,” said Ripon coach Jorge Velasco. “Perhaps it was because this was our first game and we had to go out of town.”

Still, the Indians managed to jump out to a 14-0 first-half lead before finishing up strong.
