LATHROP — The Lathrop High boys volleyball team doesn’t have much time to prepare for its first season in the Western Athletic Conference, so the Spartans are getting reacquainted with some familiar foes.
On Tuesday, they swept two-time defending VOL champion Manteca 25-9, 25-14, 25-15 to move to 2-0. They had scrimmages at Sierra and at East Union last week before opening the season with a sweep of Weston Ranch on Friday. They’ll play Kimball on the road today before beginning WAC play Thursday against Pacheco.
“We have no idea what to expect in the WAC,” Lathrop coach Heather Anderson said. “They have had boys volleyball longer than the VOL, so we are trying to go in as prepared as we can.”
R.J. Carmesis led the Spartans with 19 assists and four aces. Gabriel Gutierrez tallied 10 kills, Tyler Riggleman rapped eight and Adrian Corona contributed two kills and two blocks.
It was the season opener for Manteca, which returns just one senior and awaits possible reinforcements from the Buffaloes’ NorCal-qualifying basketball team.
