Sierra squeaks past Manteca by four strokes
East Union caps regular season with perfect record

In a match that was likely going to come down to the No. 5 golfers on both teams, Manteca and Sierra locked up for an epic Valley Oak League contest won by the Timberwolves 274-278 Thursday at Manteca Park Golf Course.

The Buffaloes squeaked out the win behind solid play from No. 1 Lexus Barnes. Barnes led the way for the Timberwolves with a round of 46. Teammate Elia Vazquez finished with a 53, McKenna Doyle added a 54 and Melanie Kiesel turned in a 59. Vanessa Rodriguez’ 62 rounded out the Sierra scorecard.

Manteca’s Kaylie Grimes was able to share medalist honors with Barnes with her 46, while Dominique Graham (52), Katie Handins (54) and Brooke Mejorado followed Grimes’ lead. Caitlyn Leppere finished the Manteca scorecard off with a 65.

Sierra (8-6) closes out the league season with a win, while the Buffaloes (4-10) dropped its second straight.

East Union 221,
Oakdale 267

The East Union Lancers were able to complete the perfect season, rolling off a perfect 14-0 league record for the VOL title with its 46-stroke win over the host Oakdale Mustangs.

Freshman standout Brooke Riley expanded on her season-long dominance with a  medalist-honors earning round of 38 to pace the Lancers. Jordan Vinson followed her with a 41, while Angelique Cardoza (45), Kimmy Lamar (48), and Brittany Ugalino (49) rounded out the East Union scorecard. Brianna Perkins was the throw out score with a 54.

“We felt pretty good about that round today,” East Union co-head coach Dennis Wells said. “Our main goal all year has been to continue improving with each match.

“I think we’ve been able to do that.”

Valley Foothill League

Ripon Christian 181, Linden 189

The Knights were able to fend off a determined Linden Lions squad in a 181-189 VFL victory Thursday at Jack Tone Golf Course.

Ripon Christian (8-4) was led by Jenny Wickham’s round of 38, while Vanessa Vallo and Kaitlyn Groshong came in with a 46 and 48, respectively. Stacie Darretta finished with a 49, while both Robyn Reyes and Lauren Hogan finished with 53s.
