Sierra High had little trouble earning its fourth win of the season, blanking the visiting Central Valley Hawks 41-0.
Sierra got off to a solid start when Tyler-Ray Hewitt returned a punt 55-yards for a touchdown, setting the contest in motion for the Timberwolves. By halftime they jumped to a 34-0 lead virtually sealing the deal after just two quarters of football.
“We held Central Valley to just one first down the whole game and were in the back field all night long,” Sierra head coach Waler Brookshire said. “The kids came out strong and played good Sierra football with a few minor mistakes, but hitting on all cylinders.”
Hewitt would add a touchdown run on the evening, while Dari Abercrombie hauled in 75-yard touchdown grab in the blowout.
The punishing Sierra defense held the Hawks to just six yards of total offense, while Sierra erupted for just over 300. Devon Manaois would break loose for a 40-yard touchdown early in the third quarter for the final Sierra score of the game.
Quarterback Guillermo Nunez had another phenomenal effort, going 7-for-10 for 155 yards and two TDs. Abercrombie was his primary target, finishing with four catches for over 100 yards.
The Timberwolves (2-1 VOL, 4-1 overall) will try and put together another one-sided victory when they play host to the Sonora Wildcats Thursday at Daniel Teicheria Memorial Stadium.
Weston Ranch got two rushing scores from Ashton Granado the latter coming on a 52-yarder with just under a minute remaining in the contest.
Defensively, the Cougars are continuing their stifling play, keeping Ceres off the scoreboard and picking off the Buffaloes three times. Alex Esan, Dawand Bagsby and Granado all had picks for the Cougars in the win.
Weston Ranch will try and keep its eight-quarter scoreless streak intact when they travel to Oakdale to take on the Mustangs at the Corral.
East Union was unable to get on the scoreboard for the second consecutive week as the Mustangs handled them with ease 49-0 at the Corral. The Lancers were able to seemingly get things going their way early, but Oakdale was able to shake off the miscue and easily roll to victory.
“We forced a fumble on the opening kickoff,” Lancer head coach Eddie Koeller said. “But went three-and-out.
“Oakdale answered with a 60yrd drive ending on a 22yrd TD run and they never looked back.”
The Lancers cannot seem to put their best foot forward and the team knows not to expect any sympathy from the remaining portion of their VOL schedule.
“I understand that we don’t stack up well in the experience and skill areas against most of the VOL since moving our starters to JV,” Koeller said. “And the other teams are looking at us as their get well game and just bringing the hammer down. But we just played a team that should be in the running for the league title.
“We did some good things against them tonight, but your just not seeing that on the scoreboard.”
East Union will get another chance to show improvement when they play host to the Central Valley Hawks at Dino Cunial Field.
“We were dominant in every phase of the football game,” Manteca head coach Jon Shaefer said. “Like I told our players before we left on that long bus ride up the hill to Dunlevy Field, we have to spot Sonora one touchdown just because of the bus ride”.
Manteca would need none of that, going into the halftime intermission with a 38-7 halftime lead. Anthony Cota had an impressive debut up in Sonora, scoring early and often on his way to four touchdowns on the ground.
Cota scored on runs of 25, 2, 73 and another from 2-yards out, giving Manteca all the offense they would need in the contest.
Manteca (3-0 VOL, 6-0 overall) got a taste of taking down the Wildcats on their own field, something that will only become more rewarding over the next three seasons for Buffaloe football.
“There is nothing better than beating the Wildcats on their own field,” Shaefer said. “As it makes for a nice bus ride home”
