The drive to Sonora is always worth the trip when a team is able to return with a victory over the Wildcats, and that was the case for both Sierra and Manteca High School’s wrestling programs in a Valley Oak League double-dual Wednesday.

Sierra continued its impressive opening to the season, beating Manteca High 48-24 and stopping the Wildcats 45-22. The Timberwolves got solid showings from up and down the weight classes, improving their VOL mark to 4-1 and setting up a highly-anticipated showdown at Weston Ranch Wednesday.

In the win over Manteca, Sierra got pins from Lucas Masestas (215-pound), Jose Cortez (171-pound) and freshman Lucas Widmer.

“Widmer is starting to come into his own,” Sierra head coach Alex Nuanez said. “He’s starting to learn what the varsity level is all about.

Sierra also got a 10-5 win from senior captain Alex Nuanez.

Manteca (1-4) enjoyed minimal success against Sierra, but made up for it with a strong showing over Sonora. The Buffaloes stopped Sonora 48-30, getting pins from Charlie Alvire and Casey Benson. Sierra dominated Sonora as well, handling them 45-22 and getting pins from Nick Baker (215-pound) and Cortez and Maestas.

Now Sierra (4-1) will have to put together its best match of the season if it is looking to stop Weston Ranch or a revamped Lathrop squad. Both programs are 4-1, giving the winner of the double-dual a shot at the No. 2 spot under 6-0 Oakdale.

“We have a big match next week,” Nuanez said. “Both Lathrop and Weston Ranch are good teams and they are both well coached.”

The three-way match is scheduled to get underway at 4 p.m. at Weston Ranch.
