When the Manteca Little League major division White Sox fell behind the A’s 1-0 in the first inning, the chances of their season ending seemed pretty good.
But a run in the bottom of the second and a huge two-out, two-RBI base hit from Travis Waara in the fourth and the White Sox still have hopes for a District 67 Tournament of Champions berth with their 5-3 win over the A’s.
The A’s, who finished as the first-half champions in the regular season, clawed back into the contest after trailing 4-2, cutting the deficit to one when starting catcher Trevor Crippen scored on an errant throw to third in the top of the fifth inning. A Matt Evanson walk put the tying run on base, but that would be as close as the A’s would get.
White Sox standout Dominic Pizano came on to eliminate any late-game heroics, striking out the A’s in order in the top of the sixth for the save. Pizano also came around to score the White Sox’s first run in the second, when he came on as a courtesy runner and scored on a Devin Sullivan base hit.
The A’s had ample opportunities early in the contest, loading the bases in their half of the second, only to be stifled when Dylan Konieczka came in and recorded two strikeouts to end any A’s threat. The stop ignited the White Sox who used a hits batsman, a sacrifice bunt and Sullivan’s base hit to plate their first run.
The White Sox were able to put together enough separation in the fourth, when Sam Rohovit tied things up a two with a base hit up the middle, setting up Waara’s game winning RBI single down the right field line. Warra’s two-out clutch hit, grabbed chalk down the first base line and gave the White Sox a comfortable 4-2 lead.
Crippen’s run would cut it to one, but the A’s would not add another base hit in the contest.
Both clubs will meet up Thursday for the right to compete in TOC’s. The game will be played at Lincoln Park at 5:30 p.m.
