Spartans clamp down on Carson

TRACY — Lathrop rebounded from Monday’s double-digit loss to Valley Oak League rival East Union by playing good, solid defense in a 53-41 win over Carson during the Tracy Breakfast Lions/Tom Hawkins Tournament tilt Tuesday at Swenson Gym.
The Spartans (5-4) limited the Senators (3-6) from Carson City, Nev. to two points in the second period and continued to hold them off from there.
“I think it made a difference tonight that we were playing to win the game instead of playing to beat the team from the other part of the city,” Lathrop coach Dwayne Davis said. “That made a big difference.
“We played a lot more under control and our emphasis all day was defense. Defense will get us the lead and lead to easier shots, and that is how we have to play. I like how we bounced back today.”
The Spartans’ Myani Thornton led all scorers with 15 points. Teammates Danya Phillips, Ryleen Crull and Molly Moakler added six points each. Ivy Pembrook led Carson with 12 points.
Lathrop faces Patterson for fifth place today at 5 p.m.
