HILMAR – Lathrop High opened the Hilmar Tournament with a strong showing in a loss Thursday, but now the Spartans are hoping to streak after earning their first varsity win, 50-35, victory over the Summerville Bears.
“They were sitting in the team room after the win, almost looking surprised,” Lathrop head coach Ed Fang said. “I told them not to be surprised, because this was a product of their hard work.”
The Spartans (1-5) started in the right direction, taking a 10-5 lead after the first period. Summerville got on track, outscoring the Spartans in the second period, but the six-point halftime deficit would be as close as Summerville would get.
Freshman point guard Jazlyn Simon and teammate Jasmine Elder both led the Spartans with 13 points, while Brittany Rallios chipped in a dozen. Lathrop has clearly been taking steps in the right direction over their past few contests and now the squad has reason to believe they will be capable of competing one the league season rolls around.
“I knew that this was coming,” Fang said of the win. “We have been working hard at practice over the past couple of weeks and we’ve been playing some very tough teams.
“I’ve told them not to worry about the wins and losses at this point, because those will come.”
Lathrop will be looking to make it back-to-back victories when it takes on Orestimba High in the consolation final.
Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Jasmine Curimao led Sierra (3-4) with 11 points, while Shanedra Pitts finished with six. Jaslynn Liotard Lia Unterholzner both chipped in five.
Sierra never trailed after the first period, getting every player on the team in the scoring column.
The Timberwolves will be back on the court Monday when they kick off the first round of the Consumnes Oaks Tournament in Elk Grove.
Umar Muriset held team-high scoring honors with 12, while Aivery Lewis finished with seven. Justin Fernandez got on the stat sheet by nailing one 3-pointer for the Spartans.
Lathrop (0-10) will wrap up tournament play with a 9 a.m. consolation game.
Jason Steele was the Cougar leading scorer with 10, and teammate CharRay Poole added nine.
