It came down to the No. 3 doubles match — the last one of the Weston Ranch-Kimball contest Thursday in Tracy.

And Weston Ranch coach Julia Bylow didn’t shy away from letting her tandem of Parmeen Kaur and Amy Vang know about it.

“I was like, ‘All right, we’re tied 4-4. We need this one,’” she said.

They came through.

Kaur and Vang squeaked past Desiree Chhan and Parlian Garzon in a three set thriller that was decided by a super-set tiebreaker, and the Cougars prevailed 5-4 for their first Valley Oak League win of the season.

Kaur and Vang won 7-6, 5-7, 11-9.

“It got so dark that the players could hardly see the ball, but they handled the pressure well and hung in there,” Bylow said. “It was very exciting and a nice way to get that first win under our belt. Hopefully we can build off this for the rest of the season.”

Weston Ranch, now 1-9, is in rebuilding mode after capturing the last two VOL championships. Bylow, in her first season with the Ranch after coaching East Union’s tennis team, said she is encouraged by the progress made by her players since the start of the season.

Another pivotal match was at No. 2 singles. Delarine Barut outlasted Viel Salgarino 7-5, 7-6. At No. 4, Abigail Balingit ousted Cara Abeniron 6-3, 6-4.

The Cougars ended up winning all three doubles matches. Renee Royster-West and Stephanie Millin won 6-3, 6-3. The No. 2 duo of Kim Valladeras and Preet Kaur also prevailed 6-3, 6-3.

Oakdale 6, East Union 3

In Oakdale, the Lancers (3-6) were competitive in most matches and won two out of the three that went three sets.

Their top singles player, Rebekah Jacobson, came back to upend Katie Odom 2-6, 7-5, 6-4. Amanda Lopez defeated Nicole Dickens in similar fashion 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5. East Union’s third point came from No. 3 doubles partners Celine Mendoza and Nayeli Del Real, who beat Madison Lane and Sabrina Richardson 6-4, 6-4.
