Except for maybe the Sierra Tournament championship, the tourney-host Timberwolves and cross-town rival East Union got what they wanted out of the grueling one-day, six-team jamboree Saturday.
Chavez of Stockton prevailed as the champion for the second straight year, beating Sierra 2-1 in a physical and sometimes-chippy match.
East Union qualified for the third-place consolation match and fell 2-1 to Linden, which the Lancers had already beaten 4-0 in their previous contest.
Kevin Singh of Chavez and Sierra’s Dominic Alejandre shared the Golden Boot Award, with each scoring four goals in four games. Singh scored both goals for the Titans in the title round. Chavez’s Fabian Pileño was named the tournament’s top goalkeeper.
Jose Acosta and Erick Noriega each scored twice in the tournament for Sierra.
In the finals, Jaime Rivera scored Sierra’s lone goal that made it 2-1 late in the first half, and the Timberwolves got an additional boost when standout Chavez sweeper Sergio Martinez was red carded just before the break. That forced the Titans to play with a more defensive posture, and they were able to hold off Sierra in the second half.
The loss was the first of the season for Sierra (6-1), but coach Jose Montes said that it was overall a productive day for the squad.
“Of course you hate it when you lose, but you can learn from it — that’s what I think,” Montes said. “I look at the positive, and it was the type of game we needed. Every game is (played) like a championship game in the (Valley Oak League), and we got a taste of it today.”
East Union and Sierra met in the second round of round-robin action for a lively preview of what’s to come in the VOL.
Miguel Barbosa scored the first of his two goals of the day in the 27th minute, but Sierra struck for two straight goals to take the lead and eventually come out on top, 3-2. Jairo Baires, Jordan Kron and Agustin Solis also netted two tournament goals apiece for East Union.
Sierra faced two other VOL foes: Lathrop and Sonora, which the T’Wolves defeated 7-0 and 9-0, respectively. It should be noted, however, that the Lathrop team isn’t the one EU and Sierra will see in conference play. The varsity Spartans were involved in a similar tournament last weekend, so to give them a few days off Lathrop’s frosh-stop team played in their place.
The lower-level Spartans didn’t come away empty-handed — they beat Sonora, 3-2.
East Union (2-4) opened the tournament with a 3-2 loss to Chavez and was later able to sneak into the consolation match by beating Linden, 4-0.
And it just so happened to be Linden that the Lancers faced in the battle for third place. The Lions got their revenge, 2-1.
“We started out flat and the kids just never really got into the game,” East Union coach Al Green said. “Linden had something to prove and we thought we had already proven ourselves. They were a little more eager for the win than we were.”
