CERES — Ceres High spoiled Weston Ranch’s homecoming last year.

The Cougars returned the favor Friday night, beating the Bulldogs 35-15 in a Valley Oak League varsity football showdown.

“We wanted payback,” Weston Ranch running back/linebacker Deon Eley said.

The Cougars took a major step in the right direction as they improved to 3-3 on the year and 2-1 in the VOL. Weston Ranch was 2-8 and 1-6 last season.

“All the critics picked us to finish in the bottom half,” Eley said. “We’re going to fight every week.”

Eley ran for 80 yards and two touchdowns.

Embry Allen completed 6 of 12 passes for 70 yards with a pair of TDs to Angel Mayfield.

Weston Ranch limited Ceres High to 161 yards of offense. The Cougars had seven takeaways on defense, including three interceptions by Jason Steele. Melvin Allen returned a pick 74 yards for a score.

Weston Ranch stormed to 21-0 lead less than eight minutes into the game.

Eley scored on runs of 43 and 2 yards, and Embry Allen tossed a 49-yard touchdown pass to Mayfield in the first quarter.

Prior to kickoff, Ceres High turned off the lights at Bulldog Stadium. Ceres players filed onto the field when the switch was flipped.

“The whole atmosphere fired us up,” Eley said. “It gave us motivation. We felt disrespected.”
