Showdown today at Paul Weston Park.

Thanks to a lights-out pitching performance by Spreckels Park’s Manola Asuncion, Spreckels Park handed Weston Ranch its first loss of the year — regular season, Tournament of Champions or All Star — with a 73-pitch complete-game 7-0 championship-round win Thursday in the District 67 Juniors All-Star Tournament at Paul Weston Park.

The Spreckels Park win forces a winner-take-all contest today at 5 p.m.

Asuncion struck out eight, including fanning the side in order in the bottom of the seventh inning. He allowed two hits and walked one, but thanks to stellar defensive play with a pickoff and catching a runner stealing, Asuncion faced only one over the minimum.

Spreckels Park threatened to blow the game open early, but Weston Ranch third baseman Trayvon Pierce had other ideas. Asuncion walked to start the game, stole second went to third on Giovanni Alvarez’s single. Jonathan Arnoldus singled in Asuncion and Angelo Aguilar walked to load the bases.

Frank Carter-Castro then ripped a screaming line drive down the third base line which could have easily scored two, but Pierce somehow snagged the line drive and doubled up Alvarez at third. The next batter struck out to limit Spreckels Park to just one run.

The big inning for Spreckels Park was a five-run fourth. Angel Aguilar doubled in Alvarez (two runs) and Arnoldus (2 for 3, RBI, run) and Aguilar came in on an error off the bat of Evan Hayne (RBI, run). Ayden Louie also reached on an error with both Hayne and Louie coming around to score on errors to make the score 6-0.

Hayne put the cherry on top when he walked to start the seventh, stole second and third and came in on a wild pitch for the final score of 7-0.

A.J. Arias and Troy Campos singled for Weston Ranch and Chez Tibon drew a walk. No Weston Ranch player made it past second and with the exception of the single by Campos, the ball never left the Spreckels Park infield.
