MFC Dash collects 1st trophy

Playing on a bigger field against older competition, Dash proved it could still dominate.

The Manteca Futbol Club’s fast-rising under-10 girls soccer team rolled to the under-11 Copa Barcelona title in Morgan Hill, capturing their first-ever 11-on-11 championship and first trophy of the 2015 season.

Head coach Dinesh Singh moved his team up in age group, which meant a change in game format. The girls played on a larger field against teams at least one year older.

Singh called on reinforcements, inviting guest players from Ajax and San Juan to round out his roster.

“The girls made a big step up,” Singh said. “… Even with the reinforcements, everyone knew it would be a challenge for the girls to be able to quickly adjust to the changes.”

If there was a struggle, no one was the wiser. Dash went undefeated in pool play to reach the final, pummeling its last two opponents during the qualifying stage.

Once there, MFC put together a vintage performance, turning a goal just before the half into a 1-0 victory over tournament host Barcelona. A Dash goalie was credited with preserving the lead with a fingertip save.

Dash outscored its last three opponents 11-1. It trailed only once in four games and responded to that 2-1 deficit with three unanswered goals in the second half of its opener.

“All weekend the girls relied on their speed, no-give-up attitude and great team defense to lead them to their first tournament win of 2015,” said Singh.
