DEL MAR — The Manteca Futbol Club’s under-11 girls Newcastle team nearly walked off with a prestigious tournament title, but would fall to the eventual San Diego Surf Cup champion Legends FC in a 2-0 semifinal loss this past weekend at San Diego Polo Club.

Newcastle opened tournament play with a comfortable 2-0 win over the Georgia TopHatters, getting goals from Payton Weiland and Faith Chavez in the win. Alexis Vilarino made good on the assist to Chavez, while Weiland nailed her goal off of a corner kick.

Newcastle then met up with United FC, showing their come-from-behind skills after dropping behind the United 1-0 in the first-half. Newcastle would put up two unanswered goals, posting a 2-1 comeback victory. Dayanna Hernandez was responsible for both goals, setting up their matchup with Legends FC.

Newcastle trailed for the majority of the contest, but saw their chances squandered when Legends countered a last-minute Newcastle scoring attempt with a quick scoring attempt of their own for the final 2-0 margin.

Newcastle got standout goalie play from keeper Andrea Eusbio, while Daisey Galindo and Chloe Cacoyannis controlled the midfield.

The Newcastle squad will try and improve on their tournament showing when they compete in The 30th Annual Mustang Girls Stampede presented by Nike in Danville Aug. 6 -8.
