MODESTO — Two standout golfers from the area went head-to-head for the George Maroney Junior Classic 16-17-year-old division title earlier this week.

In the end, Ripon Christian High senior Logan Vos prevailed over Sierra junior Drew Allen in a playoff at Dryden Golf Course Wednesday.

The two-day event, designated as a “major” by the Junior Golf Association of Northern California, started at the par-72 Creekside Golf Course Tuesday.

Allen finished the opening round as the division’s overall leader with a one-over-par 73, while Vos trailed by three strokes. But on Day 2, both players were even with a 151 after Vos closed in with a solid 3-over 75 score at Dryden. They competed in the same three-player group in the second round.

They returned to Hole 1 to settle the score, but play resumed after both sank par putts. But misfortune struck Allen on Hole 9, as his putt for par lipped out to open the door for Vos to sink his.

Allen helped Sierra qualify for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV Tournament this past spring and finished in a four-way tie for ninth place with an 84 in the Valley Oak League Championships helpd at Greenhorn Creek in Angels Camp.

Vos, a two-time Bulletin All-Area selection, was the Trans Valley League and SJS Division V tournaments runner-up and was one of just four individuals in the area to advance to the SJS Masters Tournament.
