Ninety years ago, on October 21, 1927, the Manteca High football eleven defeated the ”Flying Brownies” of Oakdale High at Oakdale by a score of 7 to 0. The game was one of the best played and most exciting ever played on the Oakdale field. The Oakdale line held Captain Eddie Forsell and his cohorts Bianchi, Cosgriff and Theiler, to very little yardage at a time. The only score of the game was in the second quarter when Forsell tossed a long forward pass to Byron Gubbins that went for about 35 yards and a touchdown. Emil Theiler converted for the extra point.

10 years ago: October 31, 2007 – Kimmy Brooks landed a thunderous kill in the heart of Manteca High’s defense to account for the volleyball match’s final point to complete host East Union High’s 25-16, 25-19, 25-23 sweep of its cross-town rival Tuesday. Megan Spinks had six kills and four blocks to lead all players, while Stephanie Swift recorded 15 service points.
Alyse Payan joined six other Sierra High seniors celebrating their last regular season volleyball game as a Timberwolf with a 3-0 win over Weston Ranch High on Tuesday (25-16, 25-21, 25-10). Payan paced the T’wolves with nine service points (one ace) and three digs.
Manteca High had what was the state’s longest active football winning streak of 26 snapped at Oakdale High last week with a 21-20 loss, but the Buffaloes were able to begin another at Teicheira Memorial Stadium. The Buffs took a 28-21 win over Sierra High as they took advantage of five T’wolf turnovers in the final two quarters. The six total giveaways included two unforced fumbles inside Manteca’s five- yard line in the last quarter. Marc Figone, who turned 17 on Friday, scored when he recovered a fumble and ran it in from 23 yards out. He then picked off a pass to halt a Sierra drive. Doug Hayes then passed to Toby Fox on a scoring play that covered 75 yards. Figone later recovered yet another T’wolf fumble. Adam Espinoza scored a TD and Johnnie Golden ran 35 yards to score. Nigel Malone racked up 136 yards and a pair of touchdowns in a losing cause.
Sierra High senior Palmer Thiele was the top boy s fiihser in the VOL cross-country championships Thursday at Modesto’s Legion Park, pacing in at 16:45.
Thursday was Manteca High’s final tune-up before heading into post-season soccer action. At East Union High’s Dino Cunial Field, EU was not cooperative and gave their intra-city rival all it could handle in a 1-0 loss to the Buffalo kickers. Andrei Rocha scored the game’s only goal with four minutes left in the first half.
20 years ago: October 29, 1997 – Manteca High defeated West High 15-11, 15-10, 5-15, 15-6 in volleyball action Wednesday to improve their record to 9-3 in VOL. Katrina Teller smashed 10 kills with five service points, while Emily Wofford had nine kills, 11 digs and four aces for the Lady Buffs.
Sierra High broke a four-match losing streak Monday night with a 15-4, 12-15, 15-7, 15-4 volleyball win over visiting Los Banos High. Lady Timberwolf Coach Tevani Liotard praised Tara Tengco, who had 15 kills and 14 service points. Kristen Monroy racked up 10 kills and seven blocks in the win.
Carrie Hartt rattled off 12 consecutive points in the first game and East Union High went on to post a four-game volleyball win over visiting Tracy High 15-3, 15-5, 5-15, 15-5 yesterday. Hartt, who finished with 19 service points in the match, also contributed seven aces.
The red-hot Manteca High soccer team finished the season in impressive fashion by posting a 2-0 shutout of East Union High Wednesday evening. Carlos Cortez and Jared Mullings each booted in scores as the Buffaloes finished 7-15-2 overall. The Lancers finished the year at 5-17-5.
Sierra High’s Valerie Mercier, a sophomore who was named to the all-VOL tennis singles team Tuesday, claimed third place Wednesday at the league singles tournament in Tracy.
East Union High cross-country coach Phil Depuy’s team overran the field in Thursday’s VOL championships at Angels Camp. The Lancers cruised to a 35-point victory over runner-up Los Banos High in the boys division. As expected EU junior Justin Willingham won in a personal best time of 15:15—24 seconds ahead of runner-up David Ulibarri of Sierra High and 51 seconds ahead of third-place Josh Roddy of Manteca High. In the girls division, EU sophomore Laura Dukas took second in 20:10, while Amy Birmingham of Manteca High took third and Sierra High’s Cassandra Forkins finished in eighth place.
The passing of East Union High’s J. T. Hardcastle led the Lancers to their first VOL football win of the season Friday night, a 36-21 victory over Tracy High. The junior quarterback’s arm generated 284 yards –just 15 yards more than the penalties the officials slapped on both teams—as he turned in his best game of the season. Hardcastle passed for four touchdowns and ran for another in the win. He tossed 41 yards to Dimitri Williams, 23 yards to Marcus Strickland, six yards to Carlos Lozada and 11 yards to Strickland again for the scores. Hardcastle also ran one in from two yards out. Strickland ran for two extra points.
30 years ago: October 28, 1987 – Manteca High’s Katie Gaynor and Deborah Hicken swept all three of their singles matches and both doubles teams took a pair Wednesday to pace a 12-3 VOL tennis win over East Union High.
Manteca High’s volleyball team pulled off the unexpected by upending East Union High in four games Thursday night before a raucus crowd at MHS’s Winter Gym. The15-9, 15-13, 9-15, 15-5 victory snapped EU’s 16-match win streak. Powered by Betsy McCall, who had seven kills and four blocks, the Lady Buffs outmanned the Lancers, who were paced mainly by Carey Pulliam, who had seven kills, two blocks and four dinks.
Manteca High won the VOL cross-country championship meet Thursday at Sonora High’s Frogtown course, nipping host Sonora 26-29. It was the fourth straight title for Coach Bob Baker’s squad. Tracy Voorheis out-leaned a Sonora runner at the tape to give the Buffaloes the winning points. Manteca’s Shannon Villines was fifth in the girls’ race.
Lynne Fowler didn’t drop a game and Lisa Bungayao only lost one as the two combined Thursday to help East Union High defeat Oakdale High 10.5-4.5 in a season-ending VOL tennis tilt. Coach Carl Bosque’s young and inexperienced squad finished 4-10 on the year.
Sonora High doused East Union High’s hopes of any post-season football appearances by humbling the Lancers 35-13 Friday night at Guss Schmiedt Field. Lancer running back Alex Landeros scored both EU touchdowns on runs of eight and seven yards. Landeros gained 106 yards in the game to break the 1,000 yard barrier for the season.
In perhaps the most dramatic comeback in the school’s history, Manteca High scored three touchdowns in a six-minute span of the fourth quarter to rally from a 15-0 deficit and earn a wild 19-15 victory over host Oakdale High Friday night. Credit the arm of junior quarterback Kenny Huckaby, who connected on 18 of 30 aerials, including all three scores. Marshall Cannon caught two of Huckaby’s scoring tosses, with David Newcomb grabbing the other. Huckaby passed for 207 yards in the game.
40 years ago: October 26, 1977 – The East Union High cross-country team finished the regular season in exquisite style Monday, downing Sonora High 23-33. Two EU harriers finished second and third. Bob Vieira had a 19:16 time, with Mike Simas, a 19:34. The Lancer women combined efforts to steal their race, sweeping second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth places. Leading the Lancers was Julie Johnson, clocked in 13:51.
For three years, Manteca wasn’t able to beat St. Mary‘s High. That ended Friday night when they split the seams of the Ram defense and burst to a 50-26 Valley Oak League win. Halfback Brad Steele scored three times, on two runs of a yard each and a 76-yard kickoff runback. He also caught a pass from Pete Duenas for two extra points. Duenas caught two touchdown passes from Bob O’Rourke and another one for two extra points. Ron Yee scored on a 58-yard scamper and Scott Morris tallied from nine yards out. Fernando Correa kicked a pair of extra points and Don Stewart kicked another. Steele ran of 207 total yards, which boosted him over the 1,000 yard mark for the season.
Sonora High stole the Homecoming show from East Union High with a 34-6 VOL win Friday at Sonora. The only Lancer touchdown came after the opening kickoff, marching 64 yards with Paul Seabron scoring from 10 yards out. Seabron led the EU squad with 90 yards on 18 carries.
A nervous and excited East Union High gymnastics team lost to a strong Oakdale High team Wednesday evening at Dalben Center. Competing for EU in the open division were Debbie Payan, Linda Hayashi, Tanya Belz and Deanna Brandow. Belz took second on the balance beam.
Continuing its domination of VOL volleyball Tuesday was Sonora High with a 15-5, 15-9 win over Manteca High.
East Union High volleyball coach Christi Chisholm described her team’s remarkable recovery from defeat last week and their 15-2, 15-1 thrashing of St. Mary’s High as “awesome”. Leading the team to victory were Barbara Van Mater, Pam Pico and DeeDee Shawen. Shawen served 11 straight points before turning the ball over to St. Mary’s.
The Manteca High tennis team lost the second to last regular season match last Tuesday 3-2 to Sonora High. Loreen Brockman won by forfeit in singles, while Suzanne Wilson and Sue Caperon took a doubles win.
50 years ago: October 25, 1967 – Tracy and East Union Highs began varsity football on a sour note Friday night as the Bulldogs stuffed the Lancers 62-0 in a game played before a full house in Tracy. Halfback Fred Barnes led the Lancer offense with 38 yards. EU is now 0-3 in league play and 1-5 for the season.
After a quiet and rather unimpressive first half, the Manteca High Buffaloes exploded for five touchdowns and posted a 42-7 rout over St. Mary’s High in a local Homecoming came last Friday night at Guss Schmiedt Field. Phil Brown passed for two scores to Ed Beck and Jerry McCarter. Pat O’Rourke tossed to Gary Jay for another, Andy Munoz ran for a pair and McCarter tallied on a pass-lateral from Brown and Beck.
60 years ago: October 31, 1957 – The Lodi High Flames invaded Pennebaker Field last Friday night and showed just why they are considered by many as Northern California’s No. 1 prep team. The Flames scored early and kept control at all times. The final score showed it 26-6 over the Manteca High Buffaloes. Bob Silva finally put Manteca High on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter.
70 years ago: October 30, 1947 – Completely burying and out-classed team under a terrific ground attack, the Manteca High Buffaloes rolled to an easy 27-13 victory over the Edison High Vikings Friday night. Halfback George Azevedo scored three touchdowns for the Buffs on two runs of 25 yards each and a 12-yarder. Reserve back Wes Major scored the final TD. Azevedo kicked three extra points.
80 years ago: October 28, 1937 – The Manteca High Buffaloes had their first letdown Friday night and the Oakdale High team tied them by a score of 13-13 in Manteca’s third league game of the season. Trailing 7-0 at the half, Manteca Coach Larry Siemering started Al Phillips. From that time on, when Phillips was in the game, the Buffs really started going to town. In seven minutes, Manteca acquired 13 points and seven first downs. Frank Teicheira is to be commended for the way he took the ball over the center of the line for gains and especially so when he had hardly finished playing the whole game for the B team.
100 years ago: October 26, 1917 – The mile bicycle race for boys 15 years old and under last Saturday afternoon was won by Mettie Elliott. Robert McKie was second, Clyde Converse was third. On account of the travel condition of Yosemite Avenue which rendered it dangerous to the riders, the race was made on Durham Ferry Road, south from the intersection of Yosemite Avenue. The first prize was a pair of roller skates.
