FREMONT – Although Spreckels Park never trailed, South Siskiyou-Weed came back late to narrow the gap but could not close it as Rafael Diaz allowed just three hits in 5.2 innings to help Spreckels Park post a 6-4 victory Saturday in the California Division II Little League Junior All Star Tournament at Gomes Elementary School in Fremont.

“It was nerve-racking,” Spreckels Park coach Jason Cook said. “Rafael (Diaz) again was on the mound and he did six strong innings for us and Jesse (Ortiz-Martinez) came in closed it out.

“It was close – they gave us a good fight – we had an inning where we kind of fell apart in the fifth, but we pulled through and we got a good win.”

South Siskiyou had just two base runners in the first four innings – one via a single in the first and the other on a walk in the third – and neither got past second base. But in the fifth inning two errors led directly to two South Siskiyou runs and the Spreckels Park lead was cut to 4-2.

After two more South Siskiyou runs in the sixth made the score 5-4, Ortiz-Martinez came in to get a strikeout end the sixth and shut out South Siskiyou in the seventh.

Spreckels Park scored four runs in the second inning behind four hits.

Austin Cook started the parade with a one-out walk followed by a Joseph Lomeli single. Frankie Vela reached on a fielder’s choice that forced Cook at third. Ortiz-Martinez then loaded the bases for Slyder Blyth to hit a two-RBI single and Christian Cruz to hit an RBI single. Blyth scored the fourth run on a wild pitch.

After the two fifth-inning errors cut the Spreckels Park lead to 4-2, South Siskiyou returned the favor in the bottom of the frame.  Louis Aquila led of the Spreckels Park in the fifth by reaching on an error and came in on an error off the bat of Derrick Kuwada to make the score 5-2.

South Siskiyou added two more in the sixth, but Cruz led off the bottom of the frame with a double and came in on Aquila’s single for the game’s final run.

Christian Cruz was aggressive on the base paths Sunday, taking home twice when throws to third while stealing sailed into left field.

Cruz was 2 for 3 with a double and Kuwada went 2 for 4 with two RBI. Jacob Nagy was 2 for 2.

Blyth went 5.2 innings and gave up two runs, one of which was earned. Aquila pitched the final 1.1 innings.
