JIMMYS ONE STOP: Where farmers & ranchers hangout

TRACY – Mario Figueroa had the mushroom burger.

And then he grabbed a six-pack of beer, bought some bait and headed out on the river for an afternoon of fun with friends after a long week of work.

It’s not a bad deal when you can do all of that in a single place.

For as long as any anyone can remember, Jimmy Nagi has been serving up customers at Jimmy’s One Stop – a unique hybrid restaurant and convenience store on the Southernmost tip of Airport way nears its intersection with Kasson Road.

On any given day at noon the parking lot is packed full of farmers and ranchers, workers and fisherman looking to grab a bite before hitting the river for some angling and the tractor some tilling.

Figueroa says that he stops in at least twice a week after getting off of work, either to pick up a few beers or meet friends for a few.

When the weather is right – “and it’s been right more often than it hasn’t been” – he likes to spend his time with a pole in the water.

“I can stop at a gas station anywhere and a pick up a six-pack and I could stop and In-n-Out burger and grab some food, but this place is different,” he said. “You don’t see places where you can do both at the same time. And when I grab some bait at the same time? And then go up the street and be out on the river? It’s perfect.”

By all accounts Jimmy’s One Stop – or just Jimmy’s to the locals who frequent it – should have failed a long time ago. It doesn’t benefit from a large amount of vehicle traffic. Most people that have lived in either Manteca or Tracy for years have absolutely no clue that it even exits. And the store keeps bankers hours – if you need something late at night, or even close to it, you’re going to have to drive “in to town” to pick it up.

But a loyal and dedicated following will help any business thrive.

“Everybody that I know comes down here,” said customer Jack Gatewick. “If you don’t want to drive in to Manteca or to Tracy or even Modesto if you need something big then this is the place to go. The options might be limited, but then again I try to keep what I need to what they’ve got. Makes it easy that way.”

Jimmy’s One Stop is located at 30836 Airport Way. To get there from Manteca take Airport Way south. The business is located just past the bridge over the San Joaquin River to the left. Kasson Road, which takes traffic to Highway 130 – the thoroughfare into Modesto – runs right behind it.
