The Manteca Lions Club are looking put these otherwise discarded items to a good cause.
It’s called the Sight First program, which was developed and managed by Lions Club International over 20 years ago, providing eye care and rehabilitation services to underprivileged children.
On Super Bowl Sunday, Lions Club members will be at Bedquarters – specifically, the parking lot at Yosemite Avenue and Main Street – with hopes of collecting eyeglasses and soda can pull tops, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Every little bit helps.
For example, one 10-pound bag of soda can tops can represent an overnight stay at the Ronald McDonald House for a child.
The eyeglasses will go to those in Third World countries, tending to their vision needs with the appropriate glasses.
“I don’t know what I would do without my glasses,” Lion Club member Jerry Weed said earlier in the week. “I can only imagine what it’s like for people who have never them.
“It must be like learning to see all over again.”
Manteca Lions Club president Lisa Stallings recently indicated that her service organization, thus far, has gathered over 400 pounds soda can tops, easily exceeding last year’s tally of 170 pounds.
Sight First has helped save the vision of more than 30 million people worldwide. For Lions Club, the program is a partnership involving local health authorities, eye care professionals and other non-government organizations.
In Manteca, the proceeds from this weekend’s fundraising drive will help provide underprivileged youngsters with medical treatment at Children’s Hospital Central California (Madera) and, at the same time, arrange accommodations for their family to stay at the nearby Ronald McDonald House.
