crime tape

A second shooting along the 120 Bypass in the past four months ended with the arrest of a suspect in an apartment complex along Atherton Drive.

Manteca Police responded to a report of a shooting Friday at 8:56 p.m. along Moffat Boulevard east of Sprerckels Avenue. They found a shooting victim along the embankment of the 120 Bypass.

The victim provided officers with information regarding a potential subject. That led to police responding to the Paseo Villas apartment complex in the 800 block of Atherton Drive. The occupants of an apartment unit were called outside by police. They complied with the order.

The police were able to identify the suspect and arrest them. After further investigation it was determined the shooting had occurred within the 120 Bypass right-of-way meaning it occurred in the jurisdiction of the California Highway Patrol. The CHP was contacted and took over the investigation.

Four months ago on Friday, Aug. 25, at 10:40 p.m. a 32-year-old man was shot and killed while driving west on the 120 Bypass approaching the Yosemite Avenue exit that’s before the Interstate 5 interchange.

The victim was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu. The victim was east of Yosemite Avenue when the CHP said someone in an unknown vehicle fired “an undetermined amount of shots.” The driver died at the scene.

The shooting took place within the city limits of Lathrop but because it happened on a state freeway it was within the jurisdiction of the CHP.
