Estranged husband under influence of narcotics and armed taken into custody

The Manteca Police SWAT team successful arrested an armed man with a gun who had hidden under a pickup truck in the 1300 block of Wawona Street.

A man with a firearm under the influence of narcotics was taken safely into custody by Manteca Police Tuesday afternoon.

Manteca Police responded to the 1300 block of Wawona Street after a woman call 9-1-1 at 12:25 p.m. and reported her estranged husband was under the influence of narcotics and in possession of a firearm. Further, she described him as being under a pickup truck in her driveway.

The woman was inside the house with her teenage son.

Officers arrived on scene and determined the man was still under the truck and saw a firearm in his possession. The initial officers opened communication with the man who was not being cooperative and stayed under the truck.

The woman and her son were safely removed from the house by the officers and further communication continued with the man.

Due to the dangerous nature of the call, the Manteca SWAT Team responded and took over tactical control. Additionally, the Manteca Negotiation Team and the San Joaquin County Mobile Crises Team responded.

After close to four4 hours of negotiating with the man, the SWAT members were able to close the distance and use a pepper ball gun to gain his compliance and safely take him into custody without injury at 4:04 p.m.

The investigation regarding the possession of the firearm and crimes committed during the incident are on-going. The man was taken to a local hospital for medical clearance due to the possible use of narcotics.

The man was identified as Johnnie Lloyd Sparks, 56.

He is a convicted felon that is prohibited from possessing firearms.
