Manteca adds 11 signalized intersections within a year
3 MORE SIGNALS & A HAWK (Photo)

A worker hangs a street sign at the new traffic signals going up on North Main Street at Jason Street.

There are four more intersections in Manteca where traffic signals will become operational in the coming weeks.

And when they do, the city— along with Caltrans — will have added 11 signalized intersections in Manteca during the past year.

That includes a pair of high profile pedestrian traffic signals, one of which has been activated and the other that will be shortly.

The 11 signalized intersections including the two for pedestrians represents roughly a $10 million investment in public safety and traffic congestion improvements funded by developers and the state.

The newest intersection to get traffic signal poles in place is North Main Street at Jason Street.

It is part of an overall $3.3 million Safe Routes to Schools project the city gained funding for from the state.

It is separate from the North Main safety and pavement project that was recently completed between Alameda Street and Northgate Drive.

Jason Street T-intersects with Main in front of the Golden West School gym.

It will also include the striping of a high profile crosswalk on Main on the north side of the intersection.

The south side has barriers to prevent pedestrians from crossing.

At the same time, poles for the high intensity activated crosswalk beacon also known as a HAWK signal, have been put in place at Moffat Boulevard and Garfield Avenue by Manteca High.

Other signals in place but not yet activated are:

*Atherton Drive at Sparrowhawk near the new Woodspring Suites hotel that just opened.

*Lathrop Road at an intersection with the entrance of the Manteca Luxury Apartments and the Union Square shopping center anchored by Raley’s.

*South Main at Woodward Avenue.

The South Main/Woodward signal poles are partially installed. The rest will be installed in the coming weeks after pipe for a sewer main extension requiring a crane is put in place.

In addition, construction is under way — or about to break ground — that will add more signalized intersections to the count.

They are:

*Union Road where Tractor Supply Co. is building north of Lathrop Road.

*South Main at Wawona Street where the city is breaking ground on the new $92 million police station this fall.

*Atherton Drive at the entrance to Marketplace on Main anchored by what will be the city’s third Save Mart. The entrance is where work is almost done on the Starbucks and Chipotle Kitchen.

*Airport Way at Woodward Avenue.

There have been five intersections signalized in the past year.

*Atherton Drive at the entrance to the Manteca Crossing entrance to Quick Quack Car Wash.

*Atherton Drive at Airport Way.

*Atherton Drive at Woodward Avenue by the fire station.

*Woodward Avenue at Moffat Boulevard.

*Austin Road at Singh Street.

In addition, a HAWK pedestrian signal was placed at North Main and Edison Street.

Assistant City Manager Kevin Jorgensen noted the city has an adopted plan of 30 intersections within the city that may eventually need signals once conditions warrant it.

There is no timeline or order , per se, as it is driven by traffic conditions and where growth actually occurs.

The list is subject to change and deletions.
