The South Sac-Joaquin Section Senior All-Star Volleyball Match is returning to Ripon Christian tonight for its second edition.

Meanwhile, former area standouts are gearing up for the 50th Lions All-Star Football Game and the first-ever Lions All-Stag Flag Football Game. Both take place Saturday at Tracy High.

Sponsored by Core Four Realty, the volleyball match will feature recent graduates from high schools in San Joaquin, Stanislaus and Merced counties. Last year, Sierra coach Danielle Deerinck headed one of the teams that included former Timberwolves Owen Altadonna and Landon West, as well as Isaiah Vander Woude of Ripon Christian.

Tonight’s match starts at 6:30 p.m., and admission is free. Although it’s a best-of-three contest, at least four sets will take place to ensure adequate playing time for all participants.

Ripon Christian coach Kevin Tameling will lead seven local products, with help from Lathrop’s Toa Fa’ali’i as his assistant.

Joining them are sons Mason Tameling and Gabe Fa’ali’i, two of the most prolific outside hitters in the region the past four years.

Tameling is two-time reigning Trans Valley League MVP and 2025 All-SJS Small School Player of the Year. He’s headed to NAIA powerhouse The Master’s University. Fa’ali’i is bound for Simpson after earning two All-Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year awards, one MVP and three All-SJS Team selections.

Team Tameling includes Ripon setter Cade Fullmer, Manteca outside hitter Jesus Gomez, Manteca middle Rob Hevener, Ripon middle Trent Olmo and Ripon Christian middle Darren Van Groningen.

They’ll square off with “Team Peterson,” led by El Capitan coach Karen Peterson and assistant Mike Alvernaz of Livingston.

Lions All-Star Football Game rosters were announced in April, but revisions have since been made.

Still on board for the North team are River Islands lineman Jaiveer Grewal, Manteca pass rusher Xyloh Kuresa, Ripon lineman Tipeti Paini, Lathrop fullback/linebacker Pablo Peña, Manteca fullback/linebacker Maava Tialavea and Ripon lineman Leamer Walker. East Union running back Brayden Camara was originally selected but opted out.

Peña is the two-time Western Athletic Conference MVP, and Paini is reigning TVL Outstanding Defensive Lineman.

Escalon’s Andrew Beam is coaching the North (San Joaquin, Amador, Tuolumne counties), while retired Hilmar coach Frank Marques guides the South (Stanislaus, Merced). The North leads the all-time series, 27-19-2. Sierra alumnus and North quarterback Zak Willson was MVP after leading a thrilling 42-37 win last year.

Four local grads will take part in the inaugural flag football game at Tracy’s Wayne Schneider Stadium.

Valley Oak League champion East Union has two representatives in league MVP Larissa Harries and Caliyah Lopez. They’re teaming up with Manteca receiver/linebacker Keira McCulley and Lathrop center/linebacker Angelique Gonzalez.

Kimball’s David Rios Jr. coaches the North, and Atwater’s Nathan Ramirez heads the South.

The event begins with the flag football game at 5 p.m., with the football game to follow at 7.

Tickets are $15 per person and available for purchase on GoFan.
